Looking for a Fun, Warm Place to Volunteer??

You are invited to attend a training for community members interested in giving tours, planning programs, taking care of Orchids or helping in a variety of ways at the Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse on the Campus of Ball State University. 

Community members, who are interested in and willing to learn more about orchids and working with a variety of age groups are encouraged to attend.  Requirements for volunteers include attending one additional training after you complete the initial one.

Take advantage of the early morning light to photograph orchids and other tropical plants, large and small. Bring your cameras, tripod and an assortment of lenses and surround yourself with beautiful orchids and other tropical plants.

The Rinard Orchid Greenhouse is located in Christy Woods on the Ball State University campus. The facility houses the largest collegiate collection of orchids in the USA in a lush tropical setting. There is always something in bloom throughout the year.

‘Inspired by Orchids’ is the newest exhibition opening at Ball State University’s Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse. Featured works have been inspired by the tropical environment of the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse. 

April 4 - 30, Rinard Orchid Greenhouse visitors can discover a selection of works of Ball State Art students and local artists whose works have been inspired by the variety of shapes, colors and textures in the greenhouse.  

‘Inspired by Orchids’ is a compilation of works created by Ball State University drawing and painting students. Take a peek into the (local) tropics to enjoy these works of art.  

The exhibit is free and open to the public. 

An artists’ reception will be held, Friday April 5, from 4 - 5 pm.  Parking is available near Christy Woods on the Ball State University campus. No permit required on Saturdays. For questions, contact Cheryl LeBlanc or call 765-285-8839.

Community Artist Invitation to the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse

Saturday, Oct. 12 | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. & 1-3 p.m.

Amateur and professional artists and art-inclined members of the community are invited to draw and sketch "en plein air"—indoors—while surrounding yourself with the beautiful orchids and tropical plants at the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse. Our vast collection will spark your creativity, and there is always something in bloom.

This event is free and open to the public. Please bring your own supplies.

This event is rain or shine!

Join us from 12:30-4:30pm for a fun Halloween Event at the Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse and Christy Woods! Visitors can search for rain forest animals in the greenhouse with Ms. Frizzle, and explore outside in Christy Woods. Outdoor activities include a story walk, mask making, show-and-tell, coloring sheets, and more! Join us while we: “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” Visitors of all ages are welcome to come to the greenhouse and join in on the day’s events. Costumes are encouraged.

Annual Holiday in Bloom Open House

December 7, 2019 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Join us for the free annual Holiday in Bloom Open House at the Dr. Joe and Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse at Ball State University. Beautiful Holiday lights, musical performances by Sedoctave BSU A Cappella Group and Hillcroft Handbell Choir, hot cocoa, marshmallows, refreshments and a children's activity. Fun for the whole family while you enjoy the beautiful orchids in the warm tropical environment of the orchid house.

Stroll next door to the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass for glass blowing demonstrations, follow the luminaria to the David Owsley Museum of Art, and the Charles W. Brown Planetarium. Then ride the MITS Trolley to Minnetrista for the Enchanted Luminaria Walk. Join us for a fun holiday evening!

The Holiday in Bloom event is organized by the Friends of the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse.

Enjoy refreshments, music, hands-on activities for all ages and holiday cheer on the Ball State Cultural Corridor! Follow the jingle bells and luminaries between the Greenhouse, Center for Glass, Planetarium and Museum of Art.

The evening will feature:

Holiday Open House at the David Owsley Museum of Art, with live music, children's art and activities and a pop-up shop hosted by the Book Arts Collaborative.

Holiday in Bloom at the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse - Ball State University, featuring live performances by the Hillcroft Handbell Choir and Sedoctave Acapella Group, a poinsettia give-away and a special children's activity.

Charles W. Brown Planetarium at Ball State University Holiday Program, providing two showings of “The Christmas Star” planetarium show at 6:30 p.m. or 8 p.m.

Holiday Open House at the Marilyn K. Glick Center For Glass of the Ball State University School of Art, with glassblowing demonstrations and the Glass Guild Holiday Sale.

If you are attending the Enchanted Luminaria at Minnetrista, a Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) Trolley service will be available from 6-9:30 p.m. with drop-off/pick-up locations on University Ave. at the Greenhouse/Glick Center and Minnetrista.

Weekend parking is free on campus and available off of University and Riverside avenues. There is no cost to attend any of the Ball State participating sites.

Solar eclipses are an amazing natural phenomenon, and Muncie, Indiana is about to have its first total solar eclipse in over a thousand years! How will our wildlife respond to a full solar eclipse? Stop by the Nature Lab to find out! Activity stations will share information about how insects, flowers, birds, and more might respond to this year's total solar eclipse. All activities will be family-friendly and free solar eclipse glasses will be available while supplies last.
