Come enjoy live entertainment, music and art during the Festival on the Green on Saturday, June 8th, 2013 on the lawn of the Ball State University Arts Terrace. An Arts Fair, hosted by the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, will be from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra taking stage at 7:00 pm.

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra will be hosting an Around the World-theme picnic contest prior to the concert. The winners of the picnic contest will be awarded prizes donated by local businesses! Picnics must register at the information tent between 5:30 and 6:15pm and will be marked by a numbered helium balloon. The picnic contest will conclude at 7:00 pm.

The Arts Fair will feature over twenty local artists, authors, and organizations that will be offering art activities for families, art and jewelry pieces for sale, information about programming, a musical petting zoo and more. The event is free, but there will be several opportunities to purchase items from the vendors so don’t forget to bring some cash! Door prizes will be given away during the fair and prizes include tickets to local arts organization events, jewelry from several local artisans, and more.

Bring your own chairs, blankets, and picnics to enjoy the show or rent a table for eight and eight chairs for $20 from the Muncie Symphony League volunteers.

Gallery 308 opens its 9th Annual Members’ Exhibition with a free reception from

5 to 8pm on Wednesday, July 3. The exhibit features more than 50 works in various mediums including paintings, drawings, fiber art, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. In its nine-year history, approximately 25-30 artists participate in the annual exhibition.

The members show is one of Gallery 308’s most popular exhibits and is mounted every summer, showcasing the artistic talents of the gallery’s patrons and this year to support the gallery’s Public Art Initiative.  This year all exhibition fees and donations from works sold will help fund the artist fees and costs of installation for the public art sculpture to be given to the City of Muncie.

The all-original artwork by current Gallery members will be on display through July 26. The gallery is open Friday from 3-7pm and Saturdays   from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free.

"Negotiating the Curve" – The art of Cheryl Anne Lorance

Voluptuous bronze and glass sculptures and fantastical egg tempera paintings will be the featured exhibit for the month of July at Gordy Fine Art and Framing Co. in downtown Muncie. on the first Wednesday of the month, July 3rd. "The downtown galleries agreed to leave the 4th of July to its traditional use as the celebration of our country’s birth, and we would celebrate our new exhibits opening the night prior," offered Braydee Euliss , gallery director at GFAF. "We want to encourage attendance, and believe Wednesday, the 3rd, will be more conducive to that."

Exhibitor Cheryl Anne Lorance is a Ball State University graduate who just moved back to her home state after living in Santa Fe for 16 years. Her precise egg tempera paintings contain fantastical elements with a sense of mystery. The artist admits to a strong influence by Magical Realism and the new Objectivity, which seats magical elements in a mundane or normal setting. Lorance packs a powerful exhibition with her biomorphic, undulating sculptures that bulge and twist beneath delightful patinas.  Some hang from cables, adding an element of oppression. Beautiful, and yet unidentifiable, Lorance brings playfulness to the work, causing viewers to ask, "What is it? A flower? A bug, or a baby?"

The active Lorance is currently part of a public art project in Indianapolis called, "Go Ahead and Play," sponsored by Women’s Funds of Indiana. This event will feature twenty pianos that have been transformed by local artists and displayed in public places in Indianapolis throughout August. Lorance has also been invited to begin teaching at the Indianapolis Art Center this summer.

The reception hours are 5 to 8 PM. The award-winning artist will speak about her work, and answer questions at 6 PM. The public is invited to attend.

MFD Fire Department Museum
The Muncie Fire Department Museum will be open for tours. The museum includes artifacts, equipment and pictures that cover the history of the fire department for the city of Muncie.

This two–man show titled “Conversations and After/Life” is a collection of fine art photography.  This exhibit features two award-winning artists, Alfredo Marin Carle and Ryan Sparrow.  Both artists are faculty in the Department of Journalism at Ball State University teaching visual journalism classes.  Marin-Carle and Sparrow earned the gallery exhibit when they captured Best of Show and first place awards respectively from Gallery’s 308’s Paperchaser 2012 juried exhibition.  Marin-Carle took top honors for his self-portrait, “Introspection”.

Style show by Pat Nelson and Ann Baddeley Keister entitled: “Putting it All Together:  Invention, Appropriation, Transformation, Elaboration,” The show will feature wearable garments designed and sewn by Ann using recycled Japanese kimono fabrics. Pat’s jewelry pieces of mixed metals, vitreous enamel, stones and some fabric were  made as the garments were under construction, “allowing for much give and take” between the two artists during the process.”  Runway shows will be at 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM with limited seating.

Holly Lay is a 2013 fine arts graduate of Ball State University where her focus was photography. Here are a few words from the artist about her exhibition, entitled "Adventitious Biography" at The Heorot:

"The body of work I am displaying is a collection of pieces I have done throughout my entire artist career. It is in many ways a biography of what I have done, where I have come, and how far I am going. It is a collection of photography, mixed media, and painting. I have worked in many different media and want to display some of my favorite works from the past years and of recent. My most recent endeavor has been a collection of glitch photographs and video. I started this project with glitching some images of Marilyn Monroe I have obtained over time and scanned them to digital format. On the computer I then opened the image as a text document and inserted quotes by her, the end result was the images you see in this presentation. This was the beginning to my work with glitch. I also have included many photographs I have taken documenting my life and family life as well as digital manipulations of representations of things I collect or of myself. Another part of this show is the paintings I have done over a long period of time. Many being friends that I would dress up for a photo shoot and then paint them in the costume and extreme make up they were wearing. This show is a display of many different works from many different series I have or am still working on."

Exercises in Space

Casey Parmerlee writes about her exhibition: "I find very often in the art making process I correct myself over and over. Sometimes I correct multiple times in one painting, however most of the time corrections are most obviously seen over the course of several paintings. With each mark made comes a slew of questions ranging from examining what the next mark might be, where it might be in relation to the previous mark and in relation to where it falls on the canvas, what color, how thick or thin the paint might be, or if I need to paint over or move the previous mark. In making new work I am constantly trying to find solutions aesthetically to better articulate a message or an emotion to my viewer.

"I have been very interested in spacial, geometric landscapes and over the past few years this has been some of my most popular work. Because of this I have really focused in on what I want the viewer to take away from my paintings.

"I have chosen to refine my color pallet and work with non-traditional mediums on canvas such as charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencils, and using gesso as a medium instead of a ground and sizing as one might typically use it.

"The overall look and feel of this work is more refined than my previous work of the same subject matter. This body of work tends to conjure feelings of grandness and sophistication with its rigid lines and frame work, but still feels organic and tied to nature. It is this balance of geometry with the organic that I find interesting."

Here are a few words from Rebecca about her exhibition entitled 'Wo' at Valhalla: "As time goes on, I have become more aware of myself, where I fit in as I grow into a young adult. My work is about the areas of comfortable being and uncomfortable situations in their ties specifically with womanhood. My drawings explore this concept on an individual level. The drawings also deal with domesticity, youth, sexuality, and art history. Large format and gestural lines support the importance of process in my work. All though most the drawings are mixed media, charcoal is the foundation of all of each one. It is important to note that the women in my drawings are most frequently not real but are manifestations of myself as well as my imagination."

It’s Therapy

April at the Artist Within will feature the work of two East Central Indiana artists.

The collaborative exhibit by these two ladies will showcase the varied interests and mediums of their work. The title for the Two Artist Show is “It’s Therapy” and expresses the feelings these ladies share in regard to their commitment to creative expression.  Judy Bunner will have several pieces of her beautiful jewelry and Loretta Wray will showcase her pottery.  Each artist is unique in her creative approach to her chosen medium as you will see in the pieces they have selected for this exhibit.

Contemporary Perspectives in Photography

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 6:00 to 9:00pm for an opening reception and art show featuring two Ball State University seniors Lorin Ashley Bowen and Alea Bowling. Their combined show will featuring works of photography focused in areas of their interest – love and life.

Lorin Ashley Bowen was born in Jefferson City, Missouri.  She is currently living in Anderson, Indiana with her husband. Before moving to Indiana, she received her Associate of Arts at Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri. Now, she is attending Ball State University and will be graduating spring 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts, Emphasis in Photography.

As an artist, Bowen is drawn to things that are familiar, and relevant to everyday life. The series being portrayed is titled, A Quick Fix: A photographer's experience in a fast food society. She uses photography to record her ideas and experiences with domesticity. Bowen enjoys being able to create imagery that documents and comments on every day household situations.

Alea Bowling is a senior at Ball State University. She will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts, Emphasis in Photography. Her first major series is a work in progress titled Love in the Making. This project is the culmination of her studies at Ball State, the final requirement for her degree and honors college designation.          

Prior to beginning her senior thesis, Alea has also done commission work for several clients, including the Ball State Choral Department, St. Francis Catholic Church in Muncie, Indiana and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Indianapolis as well as individuals.

The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the building. It will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Randy Salway: Early Portraits

Randy Salway was born in Fort Wayne and studied printmaking at Ball State University. He has exhibited work locally, regionally, and nationally in solo, group, and juried exhibitions. He has spent the past fourteen years installing the works of other artists as an exhibition preparator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the David Owsley Museum of Art. The early portraits in this exhibition are the first of his work to be on view in Muncie in nearly a decade and are meant to reintroduce the artist to the community. His recent work is scheduled to be on view later this year.

Paperchaser 2014

Gallery 308 opens its PAPERCHASER 2014 exhibition with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 3.  The 5th annual show is a juried art show featuring the artworks of contemporary artists working in paper-based media.

Paperchaser 2014 will be juried by Art Hazelwood.  Hazelwood calls himself an artist, impresario and instigator.  His artwork ranges from screen-print posters to fine press artist books and public art projects. His prints are in several collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Library of Congress. He currently teaches printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Dave Franklin, Gallery 308 Board President, said, “More than $1,200 in cash awards will be announced at the Gallery opening on April 3 including the Best of Show winner. The awards ceremony will be held at 6pm.  The Best of Show winner also receives a solo exhibition in 2015.”

Gallery visitors will have the chance to see than 50 works-on-paper ranging from watercolor, to oils, to mixed media to photography.   The exhibit will be on display through April 24.  The gallery’s hours are Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free. 

The exhibit is made possible by funding from Art Mart, Lyle Mannweiler Photography, Jack’s Camera, Gory Fine Art and Framing, and Indiana Public Radio.

Case Studies

Braydee Euliss has worked on every side of the world of art: student artist, artist, museum preparatory intern, gallery manager, patron, picture framer. A Muncie native, Euliss earned a BFA in Sculpture from Ball State University with a semester at Westminster College in London, England. She has also earned the title of “master framer,” according to her employer, Brian Gordy. Not only does she design and complete framing packages, but Euliss works on gilding projects, bringing old and antique frames back to their former golden glory. And, for the month of April, the talented artist will also be exhibiting in the Gordy gallery.

Case Studies is an exploratory and provocative exhibit that investigates institutional methods of 3-dimensional display. The pedestal, the vitrine, and various incarnations of both have been designed to unobtrusively showcase other objects. Case Studies asks the viewer to acknowledge the contextual framework of display and reconsider its furniture as a medium that filters our perception of what is contained within.

Conceptual and provocative, the exhibit re-focuses the viewer’s mind to the boxes, structures – furniture – that typically serve as silent support for art and objects. A question is being asked, “How does the framework of display filter our perception of what is contained within?”

Euliss has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits, including Select Fair in Miami, FL, Contexture at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts in Miller, IN, 23rd Minnetrista Annual, 73rd , 74th & 75th Annual Student Art Shows (BSU), Reclaiming Show, Atrium Gallery (BSU), and the Whitewater Valley Annual at IU East, Richmond, IN and several group shows, including Monkey Thunder, RE Monkey Thunder, Bodega at the Murphy Arts Building, Indianapolis, IN, and Resurfaced at Savage’s Ale House, Muncie.  The artist was selected for the Art Faculty Award for Outstanding Senior Art Student at BSU in 2010. Other awards include the Muncie Art Students League Annual BSU Student Art Award in 2009 and the Lucia Mysch Scholarship Award in 2009.

The opening reception for “Case Studies” will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be introduced at 6:15 PM for a short talk, and to answer questions about her work. The exhibit will continue through April 30, 2014, and may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Napkin Sketches

Muncie Makes will feature napkin sketches created by students and community members alike after being given the prompt “What does Muncie mean to you?”. These sketches will be complemented by other various artwork and projects from students from Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning. Students in an interdisciplinary studio have been working all semester to reopen the building into a gallery/workshop space. The April 3rd First Thursday will mark the official reopening of the building.

The Photography of Woody Noblitt
Rose Court is pleased to be exhibiting the photography of Woody Noblitt.  Woody is a retired American Baptist minister who lives in Muncie.    He has always been interested in photography, but now that he has retired, he has ratcheted up his interest to beyond family pictures.  Woody has enjoyed traveling in search of photo opportunities, going as far as Moab, Utah, and is looking forward to doing more traveling in the future.

Self-Portrait Drawings
Rose Court will also be hosting an exhibition of self-portrait drawings by first-year students in the School of Art at Ball State University, coordinated by Assistant Professor Barbara Giorgio.

Featured artist Doug Smith explains, "I've worked as a freelance commercial artist for the past forty-some years.  I've been commissioned by everyone from Disney to American Greetings, Western Publishing to Mayflower Movers, and many lesser known entities.  As a result, I simply don't own a lot of my original work.

"Throughout the years, I've had the opportunity to do a few drawings and paintings for my own amusement, however, much of these works have been sold or given to family members or close friends.  These days, I do tend to hoard what few pieces I do."

Also at Valhalla, Loren Foley will have a selection of his taxidermy projects in an exhibition titled "Transmutation". Foley describes the collection as "An exploration of Taxidermy and the Reclamation of the Discarded."

The Gearbox: Muncie

Bold and Broke

In its second year of pop up shows, DYNAMO will be hosting its seventh show: Bold and Broke in the GearBox: Muncie, the former Cintas building, on First Thursday, March 3, 5-9 PM. More than 20 artists, largely comprised of current and former Ball State students, will be displaying their work. Types of medium represented will be drawing, painting, ceramics, glass, metals, photography, video, and multimedia installation.

DYNAMO is an art collective dedicated to creating traveling pop up art shows based in Muncie, Indiana. The artwork is from a mixture of student and local artists with a variety of media and subject, and a strong interest in learning how to exhibit work professionally. The goal of this group is to promote diversity of art throughout our community, and to familiarize students with the exhibition process.

Space in Motion
Twelve dancers, twelve unique environments. Space in Motion brings together the talents of Ball State University’s architecture and dance students for a one-time performance in downtown Muncie as part of First Thursday Arts Walk on March 3. From 6:00-7:00pm, twelve Ball State dance students will perform, each occupying a unique environment created by one of twelve Ball State architecture students. The performance will take place at GearBox:Muncie, the former Cintas building located at the intersection of Jackson and Madison streets. Admission is free and music will be provided by Department of Theater and Dance musician, Adam Crawley.

The project was organized by Ball State Architecture Professor George Elvin with Dance Professor Susan Koper and IDIA Lab Director John Fillwalk. “Space in Motion promises to be a very unique experience,” Elvin said. "The students are merging design, dance and music in one of Muncie’s most interesting new art spaces. I think anyone with an interest in any of those things will be glad they came.”

The Muncie Arts and Culture Council is thrilled to have been given an early opportunity to help activate the GearBox space while simultaneously facilitating First Thursday events for artists and groups who might otherwise find it difficult to participate in this Downtown Muncie tradition.

At 7:30pm, David Blakely, violin and Rebecca Burkart, harpsichord will perform Sonata No. 6 in G Major by Johann Sebastian Bach at Grace Episcopal Church in Muncie.

Rebecca is a local performer on harpsichord with a degree in Harpsichord Performance from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from Florida State University. She was a Finalist in the International Music Prize for Excellence in Performance in 2011.

She taught at North Florida Community College for seven years and now teaches music history and harpsichord lessons and directs the Collegium Musicum at Ball State University.

Radicle Traces

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, March 3, 5-8 pm with an opening reception for Radicle Traces, paintings by Kaylee Dalton. The exhibit will feature several new paintings by the artist who will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Appropriate for March, Dalton’s work is a whimsical interpretation of the garden landscape with a focus on “the ever longed for spring season and its perpetual fascination of new growth.” Bulbs, seeds, and blooms, both above and beneath the soil, have all found a home in her most recent work. Exploiting the rare combination of encaustic wax and water media, Dalton clearly embraces strong textural differences, reflective of the various surfaces often found in nature

Dalton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Ball State University in 2008. She was the 2006 recipient of the Watercolor Society of Indiana scholarship. While attending Ball State University, she received five painting awards, including three purchase awards. Dalton studied at the University of Miami, Florida for a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. She has shown in over 25 group exhibits including Art Basel Miami. She is a member of the Northern Indiana Artists and recently received the Carolyn Jagodits Memorial Award at their latest exhibition. Locally, Dalton was awarded third place at the Minnetrista Open Space: Art About the Land juried show in 2015.

At 6:15, the artist will speak briefly about her work. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the artist as well as her unique pairing of artistic media.

First Floor: Mask Making Workshop at the DOMA

Taking place over the course of two weekends, individuals will look at masks in the collection with artist-teacher Aaron Nicholson and create their own works of art for display on March 3 at the downtown gallery of the BSU College of Architecture and Planning called Muncie Makes Lab. Students will learn how to make a sculpture using an armature, paper-mâché, and found objects.

Second Floor: Social and Environmental Justice Artwork
For an assignment in an architecture class at Ball State University, students explored the role of social and environmental justice art in generating awareness, empathy, and change. Students researched topics that they were passionate about and visually communicated what they want the public to know about these injustices through art making.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues in several U.S. cities! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, twice a year, Spring and Fall, on the First Thursday of every May and October. 

The Fall 2016 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2016 ArtsWalk, in the Old National Financial lot on the corner of Walnut and Charles Streets in Downtown Muncie, Indiana, on Thursday, October 6th, from 5-9pm. 

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together artists and art patrons in a casual and unique setting. 

All forms of art are welcome! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of artists! YART encourages interaction between artists and the community, hoping to make art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy art for themselves. To this goal, all YART art will be priced below $40!

Each YART Artist will be present throughout YART to meet the public, discuss their art, handle sales personally, and some artists will be making art LIVE at YART!
