A special edition of First Thursday, Brink of Summer ArtsWalk celebrates the arts culture in Muncie. Watch and learn from local artists as they perform their craft, support vendors at YART, and explore the DWNTWN community. After Hours Art Reels
Muncie Downtown Development Partnership will host outdoor After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in June–September. June’s film is Casablanca! 

Films will be projected onto the MutualBank wall on Charles St at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E Charles St for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area. 9-11pm

Opening Reception for Cornerstone Spring Celebration: Student Showcase Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday

As a celebration of our students' creativity and perseverance through the current

pandemic, our Teaching Artists have curated a gallery to showcase their outstanding pieces. The visual arts exhibit will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 3, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on

display until Friday, June 25. In addition, recordings of student performances will be shown during the exhibit. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time.

This event is free and open to the public, but visitors are asked to follow social distancing

Opening Reception for Summer Invitational, featuring Cheryl Anne Lorance, Aaron Nicholson, Chet Geiselman, and Josh Winkler.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate the Brink of Summer ArtsWalk, June 3rd from 5 – 8 pm with an opening reception for the gallery’s annual Summer Invitational. The exhibit will feature work by Cheryl Anne Lorance, Aaron Nicholson, Chet Geiselman, and Josh Winkler. These four artists all have strong ties to Muncie and Ball State.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

The exhibit will be on view for three months through the end of August. 

A brief program at 6:15 will highlight the work of Cheryl Lorance and Aaron Nicholson. Lorance will talk about paintings from her Wanderlust series depicting the imaginary travels of a small camper at the car that pulls it.  Nicholson’s work focuses on outer space and human interactions in the galaxies.  He will be serving cherry pie made in his baking pan shaped like an alien. 

The work of Geiselman and Winkler will be highlighted at the First Thursday event in August.  

Gordy is proud to participate in DWNTWN Muncie’s Flower Hour as one of ten locations to collect flowers to create a beautiful, custom bouquet.  Tickets can be purchased for $20.  Money raised through this event will support DWNTWN event programming and development opportunities.

“Hot” Music Night: Trivia and Raffle!

Join Madjax for the Brink of Summer Artswalk to listen to some “Hot” music celebrating the summertime! Each song played will include “hot” words/synonyms (fire, inferno, burning, etc.) in either the title of the song or the name of the band. While you shop for art at Madjax, listen to the music, then fill out a trivia sheet naming at least three of the songs you heard. Everyone who fills out a sheet will be entered in a raffle to win an artsy Muncie price pack filled with goodies from places like The Orchard Shop at Minnetrista, the Mailroom, and Muncie Map Co.! Pick up and return your trivia sheets to Natalie at the DJ table on the 2nd floor.

Bloom: A Beautiful Process of Becoming

About the Artist: Debra Shidler

I hail from the mid-west; a small town in central Indiana called Portland. Art is ingrained in my upbringing as there are wood workers, glass blowers, fashion designers and painters within my family tree.  I have always loved art since I was a child and could be found drawing in the afternoon sun by a door way. I have continually been inspired by nature, but had been struggling with a perfectionistic outlook throughout my art journey.

While taking classes for my art degree at Ball State; a painting teacher advised me to just live with a painting I loathed. She pushed me to see the imperfections and see the beauty in the work. That was the first time I had really stopped and took in my art. It was hard to see the beauty because I could only see what I had failed to accomplish in the painting. I began looking at the work as a whole with time I saw my painting process and fell in love.

I soon realized my creative style was marrying organic abstract with nature images ranging from birds, flowers, seed pods, wood grain, etc. While in ceramic and metal working classes I enjoyed exploring imprint of natural found objects. I loved painting in oils as this medium allows an artist to come back and push the colors or add textures. I really enjoy artist from all mediums as well.  I am inspired by the colors and movement of Paul Klee’s work. The clean, organic architecture and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, and gorgeous glass work of Dale Chihuly. The impressive scale and ingenuity of the Burning Man Exhibits is truly an experience.

My work to this day still explores these very key elements and inspirations; however, it was my son who reminded me of loving the imperfections of creating again. I had recently rented a pottery wheel to help my son discover the love of art; of course, at 3 he loves to see what materials will do with force. As I pulled up a pot form from the wheel he would then “help.” This created a rose like sculpture. It was simplistic, but stunning.

My art has been in the Juried Art Show at Minnetrista, Cornerstone Center for Arts Show, Ball State’s Juried Art Show, Echo Gallery, Made in Muncie, F.B. Fogg Salon and Cornerstone Center for the Arts all in central Indiana. I have also worked within the Muncie community at the Boys & Girls Club doing summer art programs and the Unity Center; as it my goal to inspire youth to express themselves and see the beauty around them.

I began my formal art training at Ball State University in the Fall of 2001 and finished in the Spring of 2006. I was able to explore many mediums such as: enameling to copper forms and flat surfaces; metal working with various metals like copper, silver and nickel; electroforming to grow copper products, discovering numerous ceramic glazing processes and firing techniques; printing and etching; as well as painting.

The subject of this show is Bloom; a beautiful process of becoming. During this time of the epidemic, I have really been able to dive back into art again. The creative outlet has been uplifting, challenging and a welcome distraction. Most of the work is focused on flowers as this reminds me of new growth and spring when the world wakes up from hibernation. I like to paint with acid like colors, but have been trying to develop other tints and shades in my pallet. The bright colors remind me of happiness and have a playful demeanor; which I feel allow my abstract figures and objects to dance on the canvas.

I hope my work brings you joy, a feeling of optimism and a sense of freedom. Please enjoy my show.

Artist of the Month, Karen Fisher

Karen Fisher moved to Muncie in 1972 as a Ball State freshman majoring in art education.  Just as her graduation goal came into sight, and her plan to exit Muncie was forming, she met Paul Fisher, a native of Muncie; the rest (as they say) is history. Paul and Karen were married in 1982 and have one daughter, Elizabeth.

Karen finished her undergraduate degree in 1976 in art education and completed her master’s degree in education in 1990. She taught reading in the Anderson schools before going to work at Gordy’s Art Mart. In 2003 Karen and Paul purchased the business from the Gordys’ and renamed it, simply, Art Mart. Art Mart is a successful art materials business in the BSU “Village.” Karen is a Certified Art Materials Retailer by NAMTA, an International Art Materials Association. This year Art Mart received two awards from the Best of Ball State which is sponsored by the Daily News. They were thrilled and proud to accept both the Best Small Business Award and the Best Customer Service Award.   

Karen has taught art classes to many young students and adults over her years in art materials. She still interacts with many of those same folks, now some have kids and grandkids. Karen still does Art Camps in the summertime and often goes to area family art festivals to demonstrate one process or another. She also taught at Cornerstone Center for the Arts for several years.

As an artist Karen likes to paint and draw.  “I love stuff! Often I paint or draw what is on my studio table. Recently I have enjoyed drawing and painting architectural components. In particular I have been very interested in corbels, molding and fancy bric-a-brac on old Victorian homes. Living in a 125-year-old home allows me to appreciate the work that went into all the beautiful decoration on many of the old homes.”

Karen is a member of Muncie Artist Guild, a new member of the Mayor’s Public Arts Committee as well as a longtime member of NAMTA, National Art Materials Trade Association, and, iAMart, an international organization of Independent Art Materials stores.

Jannell Summers will be set up outside with a table of some of her old prints and originals (inside if it rains). She will also be doing blind-continuous contour drawings for the public. 

Muncie Map will also have a clearance sale going on, free give-aways throughout the night. We will have coloring pages of a map of Muncie for kids to keep or enter into a coloring contest called "Hey, We're Neighbors!" Coloring pages need to be turned in by the following Thursday, June 10th. The winners will be announced on the first Thursday of July. Prizes include tshirts, stickers, magnets, and more. Notable entries will be displayed in our shop for the month of June.

Amy Shears, who owns Fur in Focus pet photography studio, inside and adjacent to Muncie Map, will have an open studio with refreshments, examples of past work, and will be available to chat with the public about her services.

First Thursday Open Studio Cicada Chorus Recording Session

The Muncie Arts and Culture Council invites you to stop by the PlySpace Gallery (608 E Main Street, Muncie) for First Thursday ArtsWalk on June 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm to sing like a cicada! Inspired by the buzzing, whirring, and chirping of cicadas during the late spring and summer, PlySpace artist in residence Erin Mallea will collaborate with community members to listen to and observe insect noises in the area and develop a performance as a choral insect cacophony. On First Thursday, you can chirp, buzz, hiss, hum, and scream into a microphone and become part of her work! Recorded sounds will be woven into the final project, The Cicada Chorus, which will be presented as a video to the public at the end of June (date and time, TBD). Participation is free, but masks are required.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Spring 2021 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 3rd!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2021 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2021 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 3rd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages pandemic-safe and socially distanced interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. To this goal, all YART Art will be priced below $40! YART works to enable local creative entrepreneurs and to improve the Muncie economy. Shop local, support independents, enjoy your town!

A special edition of First Thursday, ArtsWalk will feature autumnal festivities and a celebration of arts, music, and culture in Muncie.

The October ArtsWalk will feature the Pumpkin Trail and Glow (sponsored by The Muncie Delaware County Visitors Bureau), YART, Chalk It Up To Thankfulness Artists (Sponsored by Muncie Delaware Community Foundation), The Jacob Smith Ensemble, Ball State University Studio Jazz, Muncie Ballet Studio, America's Hometown Band Jazz Combo, pop up performances from Spirit of Muncie Marching Band, food trucks, MadJax Studio Artists, The Spirit of Muncie Marching Band (roaming DWNTWN from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm), and the Muncie Delaware County Visitor Bureau Grand Opening.

Throughout the evening, chalk artists will also be creating their representations of thankfulness on DWNTWN sidewalks as part of "Chalk It Up to Thankfulness!"

“Following Vincent: From Paris to Provence”: The Fickle Peach will feature a photo exhibit by Ty Morton inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s journey from the Montmarte artist colony in Paris to the streets of Arles in the southern region of Provence. It includes scenes of Van Gogh’s paintings as they exist today and their current surrounding scenery.

“Atmospheres: Fabricating Light, Sound, and Place”: Join us in an exploration of sensory experiences unveiled within MadJax’s new Design Lab location! Visit with students and faculty from the I-Made DFAB Seminar at Ball State University’s Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning. Professor Kevin Klinger and students from this seminar will be on hand showcasing innovative digital fabrication projects, and enhancements to the atmospheres within the space.

Partnering in this collaborative showcase is CAP’s IDIA Lab with the unveiling of their latest research project. IDIA’s Dr. Michael Rhoades designed and composed a site responsive 8.1 channel acoustical installation entitled, “A Priori,” which will be exhibited. Fall Fest:
Ball State 4th year architecture students are holding their very first Fall Fest First Thursday this October 7th from 5pm to 9pm. These students have worked very hard over the past month to bring change to the courtyard outside of Madjax. We have created planters, cornhole boards, and fall décor for this event. They have also partnered with the Guardian who will be supplying pretzels and cheese for this event. Come support your local University and Muncie Makers! 

Gindhart:
Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo annual exhibit addressing Native American Indian Genocide Month during ArtsWalk 2021. Abolish Columbus Day and start celebrating the native cultures. The holiday’s popularity has been waning for some time. It has already been renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a reminder that Columbus’s voyages set off a chain of events that wreaked havoc on native populations in the New World. Columbus Day’s sentiments are superfluous. Instead, let’s focus on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. Let’s start reimagining that future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall art with Anti Columbus and pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art. The artist's Green Glam Studio jewelry collection will also be featured. 2nd floor

“Plyspace Artswalk Open Studio at Madjax”: PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) will be hosting Open Studios on the second floor of Madjax during October ArtsWalk on Thursday, October 7, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Stop by and get to know the fall PlySpace residents, Adam Stacey, Makenzie Goodman, Lyzette Wanzer and Camila Ortiz. Each will be on hand to talk about work and their upcoming projects in Muncie.

The Muncie Artists Guild’s “Artist of the Month” for October is Maria Walker. She is a self-taught beadwork artist. She uses beads the way a painter uses paints to express her artwork. Maria has been a member of Muncie Artists Guild since 2016 and enjoys participating in the Guild’s annual show where she has won awards in three-dimensional art, fiber art and photography.  Her beaded mask titled "Mariposa Perception" won second place in the Guild’s 2021 annual show.  

In 2019 Maria entered her first beaded bottle "Morning Prayer" which was accepted into the juried exhibition Open Space: Art about the Land.  Most recently her photograph "Winter Catalpa Tree" was also accepted into the 2021 Open Space: Art about the Land.   

In addition to Maria's love of beading designs on glass bottles and working in other media, Maria also designs unique jewelry. Maria believes, "Inspiration is everywhere."

The Muncie Mayor’s Arts Awards recognize the contributions to the cultural community by artists of all kinds, and organizations working in the arts to benefit the residents of Muncie.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing is promoting the 2021 Mayor’s Arts Awards program by presenting a show of visual art made by Award recipients from previous years.  Since 2015, awards have been given to 24 individuals and organizations. Thirteen of these are visual artists and we are proud to present their work beginning on the evening of ArtsWalk, October 7, 5-9 pm, to anticipate the 2021 Awards celebration in November.

The 13 artists are Jonathan Becker, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Ned Griner, Heidi Hale, Bob Hartley, Maura Jasper, Ann Johnson, Kim Miller, John Peterson, Michael Prater, Rachel Replogle, and Lynette Waters-Whitesell.

Angel Gilette: Sci-fi Fantasy art with a grunge touch

Debra Gindhart: Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo’s November exhibit addresses Native American Indian Genocide Month. Altered thrift store art celebrating the native culture and focusing on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. We must begin reimagining the future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. 

Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall artwork that is pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art. The artist's Green Glam Studio jewelry TURKEY collection will also be featured. Lylanne Musselman is the Muncie Artists Guild Artist of the Month for November.

Musselman is a Delaware County native who graduated from Delta High School and Ball State University. Musselman has exhibited in juried art shows across the region, most recently in the 97th Hoosier Salon, Watercolor Society of Indiana, Ventures in Creativity, Wabash Valley Exhibition, and Minnetrista’s Annual Show, among others. She’s won over 110 awards since 1983, including winning Muncie Artist’s Guild Best of Show in 2020 with her pastel painting, “Cat Lover.” Currently, she has two pastel pieces that were juried into Biodiversity/Cultural Diversity at the Arts Center in Portland, IN, and she has work at the Fort Wayne Artist’s Guild Pop Up Gallery at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne.

Musselman is the current president of the Muncie Artists Guild where she’s been a member since 2017. She also is membership chair of Fort Wayne Artists Guild, and co-chair of their Community Arts Program. Musselman also serves on the board of Midwest Writers Workshop, where she is secretary. A Ball State Alumnae, she is an award-winning poet and playwright, so Musselman often incorporates words and poems into her work. She specializes in pastels, gouache, and acrylics with an emphasis on pet and people portraiture. Musselman has taught art classes privately and through area organizations.

Her paintings are on display at Old National Bank (Southside Branch), Northwest Bank (East Charles St.), Vera Mae’s Bistro, Rosebud Coffee House and Parlour Salon.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open an exhibition and sale of new paintings and sculpture by Alfredo Marín-Carle, Thursday April 7th, 5-8 pm. Marín-Carle joined the faculty at Ball State University in 1985. He is now Associate Professor Emeritus and resides in Indianapolis. Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

At 6:15 the artist will give a 10-15 minute presentation about his work and answer questions. 

Visions, the title of the exhibit, states simply that these works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies. “In the process of creation, I experience the Buddhist concept of interdependence,” says Marín-Carle, “that nothing exists on its own.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He uses stencils to apply forms and shapes, then rubs them with chemicals and carves deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. In this way he is exploring the creation and destruction always going on around us.

The show will be on view with works for sale through May 28.

The Muncie Artist’s Guild’s “Artist-of-the-Month for April” is Diane Burrell!

Diane is a painter, enamelist, and teacher, and her work will be on display in various locations throughout the city including Old National Bank, Northwest Bank, Hazelwood Hair Salon, Rosebud Coffee House, and Vera Mae’s.

Diane’s life as an artist has evolved over 50 years, yet the source of inspiration has remained constant. She is affected by her surroundings where she lives and works in her home studio on a lake in North Anderson.  The abundant ever-present fodder, wildlife, deer, blue herons, eagles, osprey, waterfowl, and fish provide a constant source of tranquility, and subject matter, which is revealed through the exploration and use of color in multiple layers of paint or enameling, (which is Glass fired onto metal at 1,450 degrees.) Other sources for subject matter come from her dedication to serving others through a food assistance program at Trinity Episcopal church.  She is energized by sharing her experiences through teaching and displaying her art.

Diane is a graduate from Ball State University in 1988. She continued her graduate work through 1995. She is an art teacher with an emphasis in painting and metal design and enameling.  Diane taught art at Daleville Community Schools and is retired from South Madison School Corporation in Pendleton Indiana.  She continues to teach classes in painting and enameling to all ages at Pendleton Artist Society, Gallery 119 on a regular basis. 

Diane has won numerous awards from, the Indiana State fair, Madison County Artist Society, Pendleton Artist Society, Muncie Artist Guild and was accepted in the Hoosier Salon.

William Mueller is an MFA Candidate at Ball State University. His thesis exhibition ‘Operating Cost’ is a collection of works with a narrative of how public relation, marketing, and advertising campaigns can persuade the public opinion and how we as consumers are to handle that information. The work is constructed primarily with cast concrete, a material that is known for its aesthetic value in modern architecture. This material is viewed as strong, resilient, and sustainable when in fact it can be brittle, require frequent maintenance, and is the third leading contributor to greenhouse gases. Our perception of the world around us is not always correct and quite often, it is shaped by firms that seek to do so for ulterior motives. This work challenges the viewer to think critically about the information that we take for granted.

PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) in collaboration with the Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance, presents an open rehearsal by PlySpace ResidentFellow in Theatre,Derek Spencer.

Derek Spencer (Los Angeles, CA) will direct his cast and crew through an open rehearsal at 7pm on Thursday, April 7th in the PlySpace Gallery (608 E Main Street). In preparation for their upcoming performance, the cast is seeking audience members to join them for a brief interactive and immersive practice. No prior experience is required. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Masks are recommended, but not required. From 5pm to 7pm, the gallery will be open for the public to visit with Derek and the cast prior to their rehearsal. Light refreshments will be provided at this time.

While at PlySpace, Derek has been working with acting students from Ball State University’s Department of Theater and Dance, led by teaching professor Veronica Santoyo, to create a devised adaptation of The Eumenides by Aeschylus as his community collaborative project. This performance will be presentedto the public in a short run from April 21-24 at Cornerstone Centerfor the Arts. Learn more about the performance at plyspace.org/events.

Derek is the founder and artistic director of Ceaseless Fun, an LA-based immersive performance company operating since 2016. Select projects with Ceaseless Fun include: Everyone Agrees it’s about to Explode (2020), The Stars (2018), They Who Saw the Deep (2018), and Agnosia (2018). Derek served as a board member for the League of Experiential and Immersive Artists from 2017-2021 and currently runs an intermittent ensemble devising jam called Soft Focus. In 2014 he received his B.A. in Philosophy and Public Policy from the University of Chicago.

Presented by PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union and Cornerstone Center for the Arts, the 2022 Muncie Young Artist Exhibition Juried Art Competition is a celebration of young artists throughout Delaware County. 

The theme of the 2022 Young Artist Exhibition Juried Art Competition is “My Community”. Over the past two years, our understanding of community has shifted as every aspect of our lives has changed from the familiar, to the digital unknown, to something completely different, a mix of the before-times and the future. Through it all, we have had our community - whether it was learning something new with our classmates on Zoom, having socially distanced holiday dinners, or getting back outside to play with our friends for what felt like the first time in forever, we had each other to get through this unprecedented time in our lives.

Contestants are invited to submit up to two (2) works of art in the following categories: 2D (painting, drawing), 3D (sculpture, fiber arts, ceramics), and Intermedia (photography, videography, digital animation). No more than two submissions will be accepted per student. Entry is open through Friday, April 1st 2022.

Winning artworks will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery at Cornerstone Center for the Arts beginning May 5th. The YAE Awards Ceremony will take place Friday, May 20th from 5-8 PM in the Auditorium at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Debra Gindhart Dragoo & Debra Mae Shidler
Debra Gindhart Dragoo is a installation, public artist, community curator, and arts advocate. Former visual arts educator and long-standing community arts program developer. Gindhart’s aerosol work has been shown locally, in Indianapolis, and sold nationally.  She discovered spray can paintings in a gallery setting ten years ago. Her aerosol inspirations come from Joy Hernandez-Butler, Banksy, and Mr. Brainwash. Excited for this opportunity to collaborate with Debra Mae Shidler. Shidler is exploring texture and rhythm through paint design. She has previously exhibited at Madjax and throughout East Central Indiana. Meet the artists, Second floor/Gindhart at Madjax, 5-8pm.

Ron Richcreek 
Ron Richcreek will be setting up at MadJax for the First Thursday in May.  He will be bringing new items in Porcelain and in Stoneware. Come to MadJax and shop around for Mother's Day or just something for yourself.  May 5th from 5 to 8 pm.

The Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month is Marta Stephens!
Her work will be on view at the following locations downtown: 
Vera Mae's, Northwest Bank, Old National, Rose Bud Coffeehouse, and Parlour.

Marta Stephens was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has called Indiana her home since the age of four. Her formal art education includes courses at U.C.L.A, the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and Ball State University.  However, while at Ball State, she changed her major and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Public Relations in 2001. 

Marta has been painting for over 40 years. She is an active member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2018 and has won several awards for her artwork. Her painting style has continuously evolved through experimentation and studying works of contemporary and traditional impressionist artists. She remains open to learning new techniques. Thus, this self-taught artist’s style is in a constant state of development. 

She has worked with a variety of mediums including ink, washes, clay, and charcoals. Several years later she began exploring oils and acrylics. The subject matters of her paintings are primarily still lifes and landscapes. Gardening is one of her other creative passions, so inspiration often comes from nature and the study of light, shadows, and textures.

Marta is also a published author of crime mystery novels all of which have received several awards and recognitions over the years. Her recent publication in 2021 is an anthology of short mysteries. Marta retired in 2020 from Ball State University, Human Resources, after 41 years. Since then, she has pursued her life-long passion—art.

Cinematic Environments
Cinematic Environments is an exhibition of short films centered around world-building that occupies the fuzzy space between realism and speculation. Students from the Department of Architecture, within the College of Architecture Planning at Ball State University, produced films by photographing small scale, detailed models using cinematic techniques utilized by Hollywood. Through filmic representation, the projects aimed to present immersive atmospheres without the use of narrative or dialogue. 

Students presenting work: Maarten Bergsma, Favian Cervantes, Charlie Davis, Alli Gerardot, Tessa Hill, Camden Hochgesang, Kevin Hundt, Allison Loth, Assumpta Nyein, Seong Joon Park, Elliot Shide, Long Tram, Barbara Wiley, and Isaac Wilson.

The Final: This is (not) a Sign
An exhibition of Neon work including both sculptural and sign based forms from the current Ball State Neon Class. Students include: Caitlyn Brown, Angelica Lavergne, Katrina Mitchell, Erica O’Connor, Kat Pendleton, Steven Polchinski, Victoria Stout, and Bethany Uremovich.

Muncie Map Co. will be revealing the long-awaited update to the Ultimate Muncie Map. A follow-up to the 2019 map of the same name, the 2022 edition is all new, including updated and additional details in a refined aesthetic to create the finest map of Muncie ever produced. A limited number of copies will be available for purchase on First Thursday. Visitors will also be able to peruse the Local Business Hall of Fame, a growing collection of graphics from legendary Muncie establishments of the past, available to order on a wide range of apparel and other products.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 2nd!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 2nd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages pandemic-safe interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. To this goal, all YART Art will be priced below $40! YART works to enable local creative entrepreneurs and to improve the Muncie economy. Shop local, support independents, enjoy your town!
