Make Music Not Meth - A Community Healing Concert Series
2:00pm to 10:00pm @
Canan Commons
On South Walnut at the Roundabout, next to the Marriott.
500 S. Walnut St
The Muncie Makers Market at Make Music Not Meth
The next two weeks are busy for the Muncie Makers Market! :) I know we all look for ways to support our community, this is the time!
As the whole planet seems to know, Muncie has a meth problem. So do most towns, and it doesn't stop at meth. To combat both this drug abuse problem that tears families and communities apart, and the awful brand stuck on our town, we are fighting back. No one is coming to save us, we will save ourselves.
Last year brought the beginning of our Community Healing Concert Series, Make Music Not Meth (MMNM). These events look to raise awareness, and to give concrete alternatives to destructive choices. Hoosier Mike Martin is the organizer behind this series, an actively touring musician and concert/club producer, and he has invited the Muncie Makers Market to show kids, before they make those destructive choices, a bunch of wonderful, proactive, creative people making their own community great. We are role models, and I'm proud of that.
On Saturday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 10th, the Muncie Makers Market will go as usual, at our lot on the corner of Jackson and Cherry Streets from 4-7p. On Sunday, June 4th and Sunday, June 11th, the Market will be also featured at MMNM, at the Downtown park, Canan Commons (on South Walnut by the roundabout, next to the Marriott), also from 4-7p. The music will continue on through the night and there will be all kinds of activities for kids and families including music jams, bounce houses, a musical instrument drive, and much more!
Come see the Muncie Makers Market! Fresh food, locally grown produce, plants, art, handmade crafts, and live entertainment, all weekly outdoors, May-October, at the Muncie Makers Market on Saturdays from 4-7p on the corner of Jackson and Cherry Streets in the Old West End of Downtown Muncie, AND, we are a PokéStop just FULL of lures!
*We now accept SNAP/EBT on Saturdays!*

4 by 4 at 4: MSO Chamber Concert with PlySpace Resident Artist Melissa Joy Livermore
4:00pm to 6:00pm @
PlySpace
Enter through parking lot entrance
608 E Main St.
Melissa Joy Livermore, Deconstruction project
Muncie Arts and Culture Council's new artist-in-residence program PlySpace welcomes the Muncie Symphony Orchestra Chamber Concert series to the PlySpace Gallery for a special collaborative performance with resident artist Melissa Joy Livermore. 4 by 4 at 4 features a string quartet performing alongside Livermore's ongoing project, Deconstruction, where guests will engage in the act of taking apart a piece of untreated canvas, thread by thread. Four genres of music, from Baroque to Cole Porter, by four strings musicians will be performed in the PlySpace Gallery. During the concert, PlySpace resident artist Melissa Joy Livermore invites the audience to participate in her community collaborative project, Deconstruction.
Deconstruction is a project that invites groups of people to engage in the task of taking a piece of untreated canvas apart, thread by thread. The process is intuitive and allows the participants to focus their attention on the present moment, engaging with those around them, or in this case, the music. Over the last three years, Melissa has performed Deconstruction with groups in China, France, and the U.S. and is excited to bring this performance to Muncie.
Holding the opposite end of the fabric provides the tension necessary to pull each thread from the whole. In a split second, the tension is released and the thread flutters, dropping into a pile. Each thread serves as documentation of time carved out for introspection, intentional conversation, and listening. The act encourages participants to slow down and observe the beauty of the falling thread and the environment around them.
Tickets for this event are available at the MSO Office (t:765.285.5531) and online here: http://www.munciesymphony.org/calendar-item/chamber-concert-at-plyspace/
Tickets: Youth/Students: $10 in advance; $15 at door.
Adults: $20 in advance; $25 at door.
PlySpace is located at 608 E Main Street in Muncie, IN. Limited parking is available adjacent to the PlySpace building, at the corner of Main and Monroe Streets. Please enter the PlySpace Gallery through the parking lot entrance.

The hopes we wear on our backs /// Community Weaving with PlySpace Resident Kacie Lyn Martinez
11:00am to 2:00pm @
Canan Commons
500 S. Walnut St
The Muncie Arts and Culture Council and PlySpace, an artist-in-residence program based in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District in downtown Muncie, Indiana, are excited to announce the second Summer Term Resident Artist, Kacie Lyn Martinez. Martinez is a participatory fiber artist based in Brooklyn, New York whose work generates contemporary weaving projects which combine therapeutic, meditative practice with traditional weaving methods. While in residence at PlySpace throughout the month of August, Martinez will present a public weaving project, ”the hopes we wear on our backs”, at Canan Commons.
The participatory public art project titled “the hopes we wear on our backs” explores the process of collectively envisioning Muncie’s future. During the month-long project, Muncie residents are invited to write out their hopes for the city on strips of recycled clothing which will then be woven by Martinez and interested participants into a temporary public artwork installed at the Canan Commons grates. Participants can also submit "hopes" online at www.plyspace.org/munciehopes
The artist will be on site to answer questions about the project and her process, and invites the public to participate by sharing their hopes and dreams for Muncie in person. She will continue the project by facilitating public participation each Saturday throughout the month of August from 11 AM to 2 PM. Martinez will also be on site Saturday, August 4th from 6-8 PM prior to Downtown Development’s Moonlight Movie screening of “Wonder Woman” at Canan Commons.
