The Muncie Artist Guildâs âArtist of the Monthâ for August is Shonet Martin.Shonet Martin's bio: I am a Ball State graduate with a B.S. in Art Education and MA in Art. I have taught in public school, but my passion was working with VSA Arts, an arts organization for children and adults with disabilities.
I LOVE color. My work is a collage of shapes and patterns that create an image. I begin by tearing tissue paper for the main images. The colors I lean to tend to play off of each other. Once the main images are laid down, I embellish with small geometric shapes in patterns of color. If my subject matter is a person the face is always left void of features. This is so the viewer can bring their own emotion to the work.
Shonetâs artwork will be on display during the month of June at the following locations:

Muncie Mystery!
(begins at Canan Commons and continues throughout the downtown area)
Downtown Development and Ball Stateâs Office of Community Engagement present Muncie Mystery! We need your "hand" solving this year's Muncie Mystery! Join us downtown during September's First Thursday to question suspects, look for clues and - hopefully - solve the case! What we know so far: The Addams Familyâs beloved Helping Hand, Thing, is missing! The butler, Lurch, suspects that someone in the family knows where Thing is because there was evidence from each of them left in the same room where his empty box was found, the library of Addams Manor.
Pick up your Crime Tracker form and map at Canan Commons beginning at 5:30 p.m., then visit participating downtown businesses to hear alibis from the suspects and look over the evidence. Turn in your guesses at Canan Commons by 7:30 p.m. because the big reveal is set for 8 p.m. on the Canan Commons stage.
Sleuths with correct guesses will be entered into a drawing for great downtown prizes! (You must be present at reveal to win!)
Muncie Mystery is hosted by Ball State's Office of Community Engagement, Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, Ivy Tech Community College, and Muncie Civic Theatre.
111 Arts Gallery
111 E. Main
@garfieldfrommemory is the guest artist at first Thursday art show in September 9/7 dont miss this !! Kate Parnell is 43 years old, and since February 24, 2019 she has drawn and painted Garfield (the cartoon cat) every day. She lives and works in her parentsâ house in Richmond, Virginia, and travels around the country doing small pop up markets where she sells paintings and gets to meet some of her 18,000+ Garfield-loving instagram followers. While her subject matter is deceptively simple, drawing Garfield from memory saved her life, becoming not only a creative outlet but also a source of income, stability and confidence after many years of battling depression. These Garfield drawings and paintings form a body of work spanning four and a half years, reflecting not only her taste but the incredible sensibilities of her followers, whose Garf commissions of album covers, portraits, pets, inside jokes and erotica have âkept the lights onâ and kept the project going. It is a kind of self-portrait, not only of the artist but of a community of people who find joy in humor, creativity, and love for a fat orange icon of the past 45 years, in both the tenuous space of a social media platform and in the real world.Parnell is also attempting to become the Guinness World Record holder for most tattoos of a single cartoon character. She has 32 Garfield tattoos, and needs 24 more to take the title. Like her daily Garfing, the process of building her Garf tattoo collection has given her a joyous momentum and introduced her to artists around the world. Screening at the show will be filmmaker Michael Arcosâ documentary short âOrange From Memory,â which offers a glimpse into the world of Garfield From Memory and its incredibly orange obsession. This 14 minute piece will be screened at multiple film festivals in the fall.

Patterns in Nature: the Art of Aaron Nicholson:
Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to highlight the art of Muncie resident Aaron Nicholson. Nicholsonâs art reflects physical patterns found in the natural world as well as behavioral patterns in the way humans relate to nature, both on earth and our observations and speculations about the universe. The party will be on First Thursday, September 7, from 5 â 8 pm with live music by Luke Mitchell and Joshua Vance. The artist will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.Nicholson is a sculptor and a painter. His most ambitious work uses ancient techniques of pouring molten metal into sand molds. When he does this, the act of making art is itself an expression of his relationship to natural materials. Many of the sculptures in the exhibition were made this way.
At 6:15, Nicholson will speak about his work and the techniques he uses to make it.The exhibit will remain on view through September 30.
At Muncieâs recent Fire Up Downtown event in early August, Nicholson organized an Iron Pour where he fired a 2400-degree furnace to melt iron which he then poured into molds to make art. It was an extreme demonstration of an ancient technology that we rarely get to see. In addition to the show at Gordy, many of the castings at the Fire Up event will be on view the same evening at the Muncie Visitors Bureau at 410 S. Walnut St. in downtown Muncie.
Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art. Laurie Lunsford is our Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for November 2023.Laurie's Artist Statement/Bio:
I love everything about the outdoors....and people. Plein air painting provides the opportunity to paint not only what is in front of me, but also how I feel about it, using all of my senses. Painting portraits provides the joy of looking into another person's face many minutes at a time. Using pastels, if they were not so messy, is my favorite medium because of their vibrant and pure color. I also like to flow with watercolors. I have taught art in elementary schools. Now that I am retired, I enjoy interacting with small groups of kids, not only through art, but poetry, games, and gardening. Since retirement, I have written and illustrated ten children's picture books. (All of them are on Amazon) "The Solar Eclipse is Coming" was just released, and is very timely in this season.Listing of works on display:

MAggie Abby Molino is our Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for December 2023.Artist Statement/Bio:
I came to Earth loving buffalo, boots, hats and horses and howled when Mother tried to get me into dresses. Then Mother sewed me a dress with horses on the material and I had been outsmarted. Thereâs still a remnant of that dress in the little pink box Grandpa brought me my first sewing machine in. I love to sew. That was about the same time my father showed me how to use the Kodak Instamatic. Yet another true love was born. Iâve not been without a camera since.
In grade school, I met the piano and the pencil. I wrote poems and drew horse farm plans, Indiana sunsets and insects. I was the 1968 Indiana State 4-H Champion of Entomology Insect Identification and won a trip to New York City and Washington DC.I was still studying piano and performing on stage when I went to Indiana University Bloomington a few years later. There I majored in Journalism and Communications and took photography classes. I loved the dark room and the film camera.
While pursuing journalism I got a job at Bloomington Hospital as a clinical secretary and somehow, despite dreams of a radio broadcast career, I graduated, after five and a half years of studying, with a BSN in Nursing from IU Indianapolis. Nursing allows room for variety. Iâve co-owned a custom marine canvas shop where I designed boat tops and boat covers and worked as a professional seamstress while I water-skied my heart out and raised two boys; had a 50-year career in health care working in Clinics, Emergency Rooms, Psychiatric facilities, Hospitals and Nursing Homes; went through a stack of cameras of all types; and raised a riding and driving horse along with a menagerie of goats, sheep, geese, ducks, dogs, cats and pigs. While I havenât owned a buffalo, I do decorate my house with bison, have a collection of boots and hats and wear them regularly. I now play a keyboard and am a Google Guide with over a thousand photos on line with nearly 23,500,000 views of my pictures.
As I say in my Google Bio: Nurse, Writer, Poet, Musician, Artist. Forever just isnât long enough to explore life to its fullest, but photography helps.

âSomething Every Weekâ
Curator: Ben Fusco
Artists: Alyvia Hebner, Matt Holman, Olivia Smith, Sam Meyers, Ricardo Ayala, Finn Hannan, Katie Holland, Mary Kate Hopf, Justine Horlander, Nathan Horlander, Nicole Pokorny, Nathan FreybergerOver 30 weeks between January and August of 2023, 13 artists/designers committed to making something every week, intending to display it on a 9x 12 paper poster. There were no limitations to what could be made as long as it was something every week. Some participants used their posters as an opportunity to experiment with mediums, styles, and techniques, while others drew inspiration from activities and environments. The collection of posters becomes a record of experiences over the 30 weeks. The project's foundational belief is that the more that can be created and seen, the stronger the initial ideas become and the more they can grow and change.

I have always wanted to be an artist, so I have done many different styles of art. From my days at Ball State working with oils and ceramics, to my days as a freelance graphic designer. My artwork is a culmination of years of experimenting. The majority of my work is done in what I call a âstained glassâ look. Very reminiscent of the stained glass my father used to create. I also do Urban Mandalas which is my take on the traditional mandalas. CFA Talks
5:00pm @
Pruis Hall, Ball State University
About
A new initiative for the College of Fine Arts, CFA Talks invites students to explore and learn about specific topics as it relates to career development by engaging with professionals as they share about their experience inside, around, and beyond the arts. This semester, the center of the conversation will be on entrepreneurship. Four professionals will share in a moderated panel discussion their experiences and lessons learned. CFA invites students from all over Ball Stateâs campus to join in this event to learn more about entrepreneurship.
Panelists
Braydee Euliss, Owner/Director of COMPANION and Director of Curatorial Affairs for BUTTER Fine Art Fair by GANGGANG, School of Art Alum
Braydee Euliss is a conceptual artist and arts & culture practitioner with fifteen years of professional experience in curation, artist advocacy, arts administration, and nonprofit leadership. She works with objects, spaces, and frameworks to explore the often-inconspicuous ways they hold us up and hold us back. Her curatorial and consultation work examines the interdependence of artists and institutions across public, private, and nonprofit entities.
Braydee is the Owner/Director of COMPANION, an exhibition, project, and gathering space guided by artist-centered mutualism. She is the Director of Curatorial Affairs for BUTTER Fine Art Fair by GANGGANG and has led the curatorial team since its inaugural year in 2021. Since 2020, she has served as the Indiana Arts Commission Region 5 Arts Partner through the Community Foundation of Randolph County. Her jewelry line WORN embraces a slow approach to celebrating industrial, found, and salvaged materials. Braydee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the School of Art at Ball State University. She lives in and works out of a previously long-passed-over home in Indianapolis, IN.
Eric Salazar, Clarinetist, Performer, Composer, and Leader, School of Music AlumEric Salazar (The Clarinet Guy) is a performer, composer, and career coach. He performs recitals and concertos of classical music that he feels connected to. Sometimes what he plays isn't all-classical, but a merging of different genres, like jazz and ambient. As a career coach, he focuses on teaching people who don't consider themselves to be "business people" how to be effective managers or leaders in the business world, while still staying true to themselves.
When performing, he embraces being vulnerable on stage as he shares stories in a way that makes the listener feel like they can be vulnerable too. Sharing this experience together produces a magical effect where all come away with a better understanding of themselves. Salazar always jokingly says âI owe you an explanation for what youâre about to hearâ when he presents music that he writes, but at the heart of it all, Salazar simply writes music that will tell you a story, so you can feel seen and feel connected to those around you. His music isnât necessarily in the classical style, though it is cinematic and merges inventive electronic sounds with familiar instruments.
Salazar's number one career advice is to be yourself. A lot of people think that you have to be an aggressive extrovert to be successful in leadership positions, but he takes a different approach. It is entirely possible to run a business purely based on authentic connections and gentle sales tactics - and heâd love to show you how.
Beverly Bautista, Dance Artist, University Educator, Choreographer, and Co-Owner of Dance Education Equity Association, Department of Theatre and Dance AlumBeverly Bautista is a dance artist, university educator, choreographer, and co-owner of Dance Education Equity Association. She received a bachelor's degree from Ball State University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California-Irvine. Drawing from her years of experience in the entertainment hub of Los Angeles, Beverly has also had the privilege to work on projects with Disney, Pepsi, the Billboard Music Awards, Lip Sync Battle, and iHeart Radio to name a few. With her extensive dance education and industry experience, she aims to foster the connection between dance academia students and the entertainment industry. Continuously driven by her unwavering dedication to the dance community, Beverly remains an ardent advocate for fellow choreographers as a Choreographers Guild Advisory Member, striving to cultivate a sense of unity within the collective dance industry. In the dynamic world of dance, Beverly stands as a beacon of creativity, professionalism, and transformative artistry, inspiring generations to push boundaries and reach new heights.
Brad Root (He/Him), Owner and Director of Roots' School of Theatre, Department of Theatre and Dance Alum
Brad Root is a small business owner and youth theatre instructor from Indianapolis. He received his BFA in Acting from Ball State University in 2013. After graduating he moved to New York City, but came back to Indiana every June to teach Mud Creek Theaterâs summer program with his wife Mindy. Brad quickly found a real passion for teaching. He continued to run and expand that program over the next nine summers, as well as serve on their board of directors. In 2017 he and his wife decided to take a chance with their newfound passion, and started their own youth program in Fishers Indiana called Rootsâ School of Theatre. The school has continued to grow and improve over the last six and a half years. Brad is very grateful for the opportunity to help young performers find their voice, and for the incredible partnership he has with his wife Mindy.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to highlight the art of graphic artist John Morris who has lived in Muncie since 2014. The party will be on First Thursday, April 4, from 5 â 8 pm. The artist will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. For this exhibition, Morris has made layered collages with physical clippings from comic books which he then translates into digital pixelated images in a computer program allowing them to be interpreted as a pattern for his larger-scale compositions made of Perler Beads.
Perler Beads originated as a therapeutic hobby for the elderly and is a medium far removed from the immediacy of digital design. His use of round beads introduces a contrast with the square pixels typical of digital images. The labor-intensive nature of working with the beads, which requires assembling thousands of beads by hand and fusing them together with heat, serves as a method for Morris to "reclaim labor."
At 6:15, John will speak about his work and his process.
The exhibit will remain on view through April 27.

Nick Martin is the Muncie Artists Guild's âArtist of the Monthâ for April 2024.Nickâs Artist Statement/Bio:
I'm a local artist who loves to paint, draw, and experiment with art materials. I mostly do genre paintings: portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and abstracts. I like to work on a small scale so I can put in lots of details and move on to a fresh idea within a sitting or two. I earned my MFA from SIUE in Drawing and Studio Art, studied at Purdue, Alma College, and NMU. I started an Art group called Yorktown Art Lover's League in 2023, we meet every third Wednesday of the month at Smith Street Studios from 5-8pm. I teach art classes at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts and the YOC, do private art lessons, and teach tennis at the YMCA. I love teaching, probably because I've had some really exceptional teachers and am very curious. I try to make my classrooms and events as fun and educational as possible. It's great to see people with little art experience become surprised and enthusiastic about making more art, and it's always good to spend time with playful and creative people. My favorite part about art is sharing what I love and building our art community. People that make things have to put themselves out there a little, you have to be brave and genuine to do that. His work will be shown at the following locations: Northwest Bank (E Charles), Old National Bank (S Madison), Rosebud Coffee House, Vera Mae's Bistro, and Parlour Salon.
