In memory of School of Music alum Uttamlal “Tom” Shah, who was killed in a U.S. Embassy bombing in Kenya in 1998, the Scholarship Award Concert features Ball State’s top three Jazz Ensembles under the direction of Mark Buselli, Director of Jazz Studies.

The Jazz Ensembles perform with the winners of the Dimensions in Jazz High School Bands competition and with guest trumpeter and vocalist Byron Stripling. Mr. Stripling, current Director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, has been a featured soloist with orchestras and at jazz festivals throughout the country and the world, and has been noted by the New York Times as "...a powerful trumpeter, at ease with the most complicated and detailed bebop lines and an open-armed Armstrong swagger." Mark Buselli directs the ensembles.

The Art of Jazz Series presents The Kennedy Dream by Oliver Nelson. Recorded in 1967 and never performed since, this will be a must see for 2014. Fifty years after the death of John F. Kennedy, this hour long set of songs and speeches still maintains relevant today. The work features a full jazz ensemble and scaled down orchestra.

Under the direction of Mark Buselli, Ball State’s three jazz ensembles perform for this opening season concert.

The School of Music presents a sampling of its wind, orchestral, jazz, and choral ensembles in a concert showcasing its exceptional students. All proceeds benefit student scholarships in the School of Music.

New York City trumpeter Scott Wendholt joins the Ball State Jazz Ensembles for the first Art of Jazz Series concert of the season. Wendholt is on faculty at Manhattan School of Music and the Jamey Aebersold summer jazz camps, and has worked with artists such as Kenny Garrett, Cyrus Chestnut, Christian McBride, Don Braden and Bruce Barth. Mark Buselli directs the ensembles.

The symphony orchestra and jazz ensembles come together to present a performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite paired with Duke Ellington's jazz adaptation in a "back and forth" concept.

Ralston C. “Morgy” Craig, was an outstanding solo saxophonist who worked on a variety of projects with the Ball State band program in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Jazz Ensembles perform with the winners of the Dimensions in Jazz High School Bands competition and with guest guitarist Fareed Haque. In 2009, Haque was named "Best World Guitarist" by Guitar Player Magazine. On faculty at Northern Illinois University, Haque has collaborated with artists such as Paquito D'Rivera, David Holland, Sting, and Joe Henderson, to name a few. Mark Buselli directs the ensembles.

The Art of Jazz Series presents the Ball State Jazz Ensembles in performance with the Caswell sisters, featuring vocalist Rachel and violinist Sara. The Caswell sisters have appeared at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at the Thelonious Monk Institute's Summer Residency program in Aspen and Snowmass, Colorado. Their debut Caswell Sisters album Alive in the Singing Air was released in early 2013 on Turtle Ridge Records.
