Writing will come to life from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. tonight in Bracken Library Room 104 at the third annual Undergraduate Writers Gala. Twenty students will present original works in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. After the student presentations, everyone who attends can participate in a round robin haiku contest. Prizes will be provided. “The purpose is to showcase undergraduate talent inside and out of the department and allow them to compete and get their work out there,” said Tyler Gobble, president of the Writers Community of Ball State. The Student Government Association and the Writers Community are co-sponsoring the event. This is the first year for their partnership. Last year 65 students attended, but Gobble said he’s hoping to see 75 people there this year. Free food will also be provided.

Mark Massé of the Journalism Department and Jill Christman of the English Department will read essays published in the latest issue of River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative.

Mitchell L. H. Douglas's debut poetry collection, Cooling Board: A Long-Playing Poem (Red Hen Press, 2009), explores the personal and professional struggles of soul legend Donny Hathaway.

Mary Miller's short story collection, Big World, was published in February 2009 by Short Flight/Long Drive Books.

Kao Kalia Yang's first memoir, The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir, was published by Coffee House Press in 2009.

Matt Bell Matt Bell is the author of a forthcoming fiction collection, How They Were Found (Keyhole, Fall 2010). He is also the editor of The Collagist and the series editor of Dzanc's Best of the Web anthology series.

Ball State students from this spring's Creative Writing in the Community class will read excerpts of poetry and prose written in collaboration with their partners from American Heritage, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware County, Hillcroft Services, and Motivate Our Minds. Cathy Shouse, Journalist and Author of Images of America: Fairmount, will read and discuss her recently released book. Fans of James Dean, Jim Davis, and Indiana history will certainly enjoy this presentation.

Mark Zupan, author of this year's Freshman Common Reader "Gimp" and star of the award winning documentary "Murderball," will present in Emens Auditorium on Tuesday September 28th at 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The E.B.& Bertha C. Ball Center (400 N Minnetrista Parkway, Muncie) presents "To Kill a Mockingbird: From Novel to Film" hosted by Conrad Lane, Friday, October 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Conrad Lane will discuss the major differences between the novel and the film, examine the making of the movie, and highlight the various cast members. Patricia Henley's novel, HUMMINGBIRD HOUSE, was a finalist for the National Book Award. She is also the author of two chapbooks, four story collections, and another novel. Her latest book is OTHER HEARTBREAKS, a collection of short stories. She is a Professor of English at Purdue University.

Mary Leader is the author of THE PENULTIMATE SUITOR (winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize), and RED SIGNATURE (a National Poetry Series selection). Her latest collection is BEYOND THE FIRE. A former Assistant State Attorney General of Oklahoma, she is now a Professor of English at Purdue University.

This event is free and open to the public and will include refreshments.
