“The ART of #MeToo”: The movement heard around the world. We’ve all heard of women coming forward with their stories of mistreatment from men. Molestation is maturity in a moment a sort of soul murder. This problem, forbidden from conversation for so many years, stems from a variety of underlying factors at play. One in five women will be raped in her lifetime. Rape culture is prevalent in all communities worldwide. Women in power in the USA and Europe had the opportunity to spread their stories and combat the stigma of a woman standing up for herself. Just a century ago, the #MeToo movement would not have been possible.Local artist Debra Gindhart’s First Thursday exhibit “The ART of #MeToo” combines assemblage art and poetry.

This CAP elective explored the generative act of architecture through the lens of craft. Investigations took positions on technique, authorship, as well as translations between drawing and imaging, technology and craft, aesthetics and information- not necessarily in opposition but in dialogue.  Exhibit also includes new work from English 421 History of the Book (Instructors: Rai Peterson, Book Arts Collaborative with Kim Miller, Tribune Showprint) as well as students’ continued explorations. Madjax North Entry Hall, 5-8pm

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

Shane Leffingwell: Artist Shane Leffingwell works with alcohol ink on ceramic tile, sandblasts and paints glass, makes reclaimed art and works with other mediums. This showing will spotlight alcohol inks on  coasters/coaster sets, trivets, spoon rests, individual tiles for display, and paperweights at the Madjax Studios on the 2nd floor from 5-8PM.  He even does light switch and outlet covers!  Leffingwell’s art focuses mostly on abstract images that bring to mind a different idea to each person.  Prices range from $2 to $100.

Sparks is a full-time artist who enjoys painting portraits, figure studies, landscapes and seascapes in oils and pastels. She considers herself blessed for her God-given talent. She started winning awards for her art at a very young age. She won her first award at seven, and received her first portrait commission in her teens. She is self-taught through studying art in national and local museums and learning by experimentation. Her paintings have won numerous awards including “Best of Show” in juried exhibits in Indiana and North Carolina. Her murals have been featured in national magazines and she has been listed in the fine arts section of the “International Who’s Who in Interior Design.”  She currently accepts commissions from throughout the United States. Locally, her work is well recognized in such venues as the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and many private collections.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts

Cornerstone Center for the Arts will be hosting the Opening Reception for "A Tribute to Glass,” an exhibit that will be held in our Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery from 5- 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 4. This gallery is located on the second floor of the Cornerstone Center for the Arts building. Local artist Terrika Clark challenges visitors to see glass differently with her work. She uses acrylic on canvas along with crushed glass to create each piece. We look forward to welcoming guests into our building, but request that visitors follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Do you have the brains, heart and courage to solve the Muncie Mystery?

A crime – pretend crime, of course – has been committed and we need YOUR help finding the culprit and the “weapon” used.

Join fellow citizen CSI: Emerald City investigators for the second Muncie Mystery during First Thursday on May 6 in downtown Muncie.

According to reports, a break-in has occurred at the Wizard of Oz’s secret Muncie laboratory in the “Emerald City” neighborhood. The suspect, despite several warnings to pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, entered the restricted area. The Wizard confronted the suspect and suffered a blow to his noggin but has not been able to identify the perpetrator.

Six primary suspects - Wicked Witch of West, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion, Glinda the Good Witch and The Mayor of Munchkinland - were spotted near the scene at the time of the crime. And, lucky for our eagle-eyed investigators, several pieces of evidence were left behind.

Between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, investigators of all ages are invited to visit 10 participating downtown businesses. At each location, you will have the chance to question suspects about their whereabouts during the time of the break in and look at crime lab reports on several possible “weapons.”

Participating businesses are YWCA, Aspect 6, Kirk's Bike Shop, Inland Design, Vahalla (21+), IVY Tech (Fisher Building), Twin Archer, Mama Bonds and The Fickle Peach (21+).

You can download a Crime Tracker – with map - now at www.muncieneighborhoods.org/munciemystery. You may also pick one up during First Thursday at Canan Commons or Dave’s Alley.

Crime Trackers must be turned in at Canan Commons by 6:30 p.m. The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Canan Commons at 7.

Investigators will also be able to enjoy tethered hot air balloon “rides” and meet a Horse of a Different Color and the Runway for Rescues animals at Canan Commons during the event. The hot air balloon will be set up for photo opportunities at 5 and begin tethered rides at 6:45 p.m.

Investigators who correctly identify the criminal and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including 1 Overnight Stay at the Courtyard Marriott;

2 Family Pack Tickets to see Muncie Civic Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz at Canan Commons; 1 Annual Family Membership to the Muncie Children's Museum; 1 Muncie Graphic Pillow from Muncie Map Co.; 1 Bruce Pizza and $10 drink certificate from Vallhalla; 2 tickets to Sept. 2 BSU football season opener game with BSU vs. Western Illinois; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to Twin Archer; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to The Caffeinery, and 1 Tethered Hot Air Balloon Ride at the event.

Participants are asked to follow posted mask requirements inside some downtown businesses and it is suggested masks be worn outside when in large crowds.

Barry Banks, Founder and Director Emeritus of Red-tail Land Conservancy, will be strumming his guitar from 5:00 and 5:45.  At 6:00 and 7:00, David Dale and Brian Gordy will be sharing memories of Jim. Following their comments, for those comfortable, masks will come down for a toast to our beloved Jim.

Jim’s works will be on view and for sale through May 28. Jim Faulkner's dedication, sensitivity, and skill as a painter for more than 50 years made him one of the most revered artists in our region and statewide.  During his career, Jim’s paintings defined East Central Indiana's open landscapes, weathered buildings, and tree lines. His images are witness to the constant winds, shifting bedrock, and changing rural environment of Indiana.

During the show we encourage guests to share their memories of Jim in a journal which can be passed on to family and friends.

Mattie Ewing
Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Neon Trippy art, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work. Their new business name is EmoGypsy Pride N' More.

The Future of Work
The Future of Work will be set up at Madjax to distribute free STEM kits with materials for participation in a Virtual Workshop led by Ivy Tech instructors. We will also have registration for summer programming for youth and adults. 1st floor, Madjax.

Alison Beam-Hindman is the Muncie Artists Guild’s featured Artist of the Month for May. 

Growing up on a small farm in Northern Indiana, Beam-Hindman learned an appreciation for the natural world from her father who also sparked her early interest in astronomy by pointing out stars by name in the clear night skies of Starke County Indiana.

Beam-Hindman earned a Bachelor of Science in technology from Purdue University North Central, and 22 years later, earned a Master of Arts in adult education from Ball State University. After retiring from Ivy Tech Community College, Beam-Hindman took time to pursue an early interest in art. She is a self-taught artist who paints in acrylics, and as a member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2015, she credits the other Guild members with providing the mentoring and friendship she needed to hone her artistic skills.

Years ago, Beam-Hindman entered the open division competition at the Delaware County Fair with a painting on cardboard in poster paints and was encouraged when the space-themed painting won first place! In 2010, Beam-Hindman’s painting of Voyager II won 2nd place for Imaging, plus the Judges’ Choice Award, at the Great Lakes Astronomical League’s competition for photographers and imagers.  Her triptych paintings of Comet McNaught won first place for Imaging at the Annual Indiana Family Star Party in 2012. Several of her space-themed paintings have also won awards at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Shows. 

Beam-Hindman’s lifelong interest in astronomy and space exploration inspires much of her artwork, as do works by space artists Chesley Bonestell, David Hardy and astronaut/artist Alan Bean. Beam-Hindman is also a charter member of the Muncie Astronomy Club since 2000 and is active in the Club’s community outreach program on science education, where she uses art to promote and enhance the program.

Five graduating seniors from Ball State’s School of Art collaborated to curate a selection of recent work that takes up space and breaks up rooms. The work investigates a wide range of topics surrounding relationships: friendship, family, trauma, queerness, space and time. 

Show opens First Thursday but will continue through May 9 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm each day.

Opening Reception for Darla Gaskins’s Gallery: Persphone
Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts
In her first solo art exhibit entitled Persphone, Darla Gaskins brings together the worlds of sorrow and joy. With pieces portraying both positive and negative emotions, this gallery shows the beauty in both darkness and light. Gaskin’s exhibit will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts during the month of July.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 1st, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, July 30. A virtual gallery showcasing Gaskin’s pieces will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time.

This event is free and open to the public, but visitors are asked to follow social distancing guidelines and to wear masks.

Music, 2nd floor: “American” Music Night: Trivia and Drawing!
Join Madjax for July’s First Thursday and listen to some “American” music celebrating Independence Day! Each song played will include words associated with “America” (America, freedom, liberty, etc.) in either the title of the song or the name of the band. While you shop for art at Madjax, listen to the music, then fill out a trivia sheet naming at least three of the songs you heard. Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker, visual arts educator and community arts programmer will feature her Green Glam Studio jewelry for July First Thursdays at Madjax Muncie. Featuring Tibetan filigree earrings and earrings created using vintage necklace clasps. Found objects, estate baubles, thrift store finds combined with design and creative techniques result in one of a kind accessories. Pati Sparks: As a fulltime, professional artist, Pati (Bell) Sparks specializes in portraits and landscapes in oil and pastel. Sparks teaches art privately from her studio north of Sulphur Springs and has had a long and successful career as a mural artist in Indianapolis. Currently she continues to create artwork in her childhood home, a Victorian farm house in Henry County.

Art has been a large part of who Sparks is from a very young age.  She won her first award at seven, and received her first portrait commissions while still in her teens. Sparks is a naturally gifted artist, developing her talent by studying fine art in various museums and galleries and by experimentation.  She draws much inspiration from her passions for travel and her observations of people. 

Her paintings have won numerous awards including “Best of Show” in juried exhibits in Indiana and North Carolina. Her murals have been featured in national magazines including Better Homes and Gardens and she has been listed in the fine arts section of the “International Who’s Who in Interior Design.”   Her work is well recognized in venues including the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and Kona Jack’s Restaurant (Indianapolis, IN) and the Medical College of Georgia Children’s Hospital (Augusta, GA).   Her paintings and murals are part of numerous  private collections in Indiana and in the American Southeast.

Karen S. Evans: Karen Evans has loved drawing and creating all her life.  Some of her fondest childhood memories are of drawing alongside her brother who went on to earn his MFA and made his living as an artist. Karen’s small high school didn’t even offer art as a subject, but despite being unable to pursue her artistic interests in as straightforward a way as her brother, she has always enjoyed being creative.  

Immediately after high school she began working at the Winchester Gazette, setting type. Her lifelong work has been in printing and doing graphic artwork for different newspapers. She was especially good at creating ads for area sales representatives.

Over the years, her creativity has taken several forms, including cutting hair, decorating cakes, 

making candy, painting wooden and ceramic ornaments and crafts, taking photographs, managing flower gardens, making silk flower arrangements,and decorating windows for the holidays.

Always wanting a creative outlet, she began oil painting lessons in the late 1980s with various 

Artists including Steve Ross (son of the famous Bob Ross), Martha Searcy, Phyllis Whitworth, and Dorothy Humbarger. For the past several years Evans has studied painting with her fellow artist of the month, Pati Sparks, who describes Evans as “one of my most talented students!”  and “She isn’t satisfied until her paintings are ‘just right.’”  

Evans focuses mainly on creating landscapes, but also enjoys painting flowers and portraits. Evans says, “My desire is to continue improving my ability to capture the interesting and beautiful things around us using oil paint and canvas.”

Opening Reception for Crosbys’ Gallery: Dimensions Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with Muncie DWNTWN’s First Thursday

Within their debut joint exhibit, Dimensions, Leon Crosby collaborates with his wife, Laura Crosby, to showcase how different perspectives can create one cohesive story. Through this mixed media gallery, the Crosbys highlight elements of colorful fun and whimsical stories. The Crosbys’ exhibit will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts during the month of August.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, Aug. 5, from 5 - 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display throughout the month, until Friday, Aug. 27. Additional art pieces will be available for purchase in an adjoining room on the second floor during the opening reception.

First Thursday, Reception for Summer Invitational, featuring Chet Geiselman, Josh Winkler, Cheryl Anne Lorance, and Aaron Nicholson.
Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, August 5, from 5 – 8 pm with a reception for the gallery’s annual Summer Invitational. The exhibit features work by Chet Geiselman, Josh Winker, Cheryl Anne Lorance, and Aaron Nicholson. These four artists all have strong ties to Muncie and Ball State. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

A brief program at 6:15 will highlight Chet Geiselman who will talk about his long running series of bas relief wooden sculptures.  Geiselman shapes pieces of wood and assembles them like a puzzle forming three-dimensional images.   “Sometimes the images originate as doodles in the margins of his notepad,” says Gordy owner Carl Schafer.  “The sculptures are a record of his wandering thoughts while doing daily tasks not needing his full attention.”

The exhibit will remain on view through August 28.

FUN WITH POETRY and MESSAGE IN A CAN is the August First Thursdays at Madjax exhibit by local artist and maker Debra Gindhart Dragoo. Her second floor gallery Gindhart at Madjax will feature humorous and telling mixed media wall art. Carla’s Bio:
Drawing and making things have been present in my life since childhood. I recently retired from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ball State where I taught drawing and graphics, and design and other professional courses. Originally my focus in college was Fine Arts, but an interest in Architecture took me in a different direction. After graduation I practiced in the Washington DC area, working on several projects that were more about landscape than architecture, then embarked on a mid-life career change to study and teach landscape architecture. 

With full-time teaching aside now, a return to making art has been a delight. Drawing with pen and pastel, I’ve also taken classes in printmaking, both on paper and fabric. I was surprised by a growing fascination with fabric and stitch – drawing lines with thread and making marks with dye – and have been making work to exhibit for over three years. I currently have three representational works in the Figures of Speech show at the Anderson Museum, and two abstract pieces that will be in Fabulous Fibers IV in the fall in Henderson, Kentucky.  

As a member of the Muncie Art Guild I’ve been showing work locally for the past several years, as well as with the Pendleton Artists Society, where I’m also a member. Both organizations do a great deal toward bringing art into the community in our area, and I’m pleased to be a part of that effort.
