    Heatherly worked at Muncie Community Schools for more than two decades before retiring in 2011. Since that time, he has been pursuing his passion for oil painting. His hard work at honing his painting skills has paid off with success as he has won several awards for his paintings in the past ten years. In 2019 he won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Show. 

    Heatherly prefers to paint people, landscapes and buildings. His wartime experience also influences his artwork.  Heatherly is a Vietnam War Army Veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division from 1970 to 1971. He has created several paintings of soldiers in action from this time period. One of these paintings is proudly on permanent display in the Yorktown American Legion. 

    As the Muncie Artists Guild’s Artist of the Month, Tom Heatherly’s oil paintings will be on display for the entire month of March at Northwest Bank on East Charles, at Vera Mae’s Bistro on South Walnut, at Old National Bank on South Madison Avenue and at Let There Be Art on White River Boulevard in Muncie.

    Opening Reception for Fire an Art Exhibition by Scott Livingston
    Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday

    In his debut exhibit, local artist Scott Livingston shares what remains of his abstract pieces after they've been engulfed in flames. His show, Fire, will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts.

    The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 4, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, March 26. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time.

    Drawing and making things have been strong lines of continuity for me in a life that has otherwise been nomadic and varied. I recently retired from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ball State where I taught drawing and graphics, and design and other professional courses, similar teaching loads as at my prior two universities, at Illinois and Cornell. This followed a mid-life career change from practicing architecture, and a realization  that the in between spaces were of more interest to me than the buildings. Two years in  graduate school in landscape architecture were a wonderful renewal, and a return to drawing and making again.

     With full-time teaching aside now, there has been time to do both. Sketching with ink, pencil and Conte crayons has led to doing portraits of friends’ horses in pastel, as well as to turning some drawings into linocuts and prints. 

    I’ve also grown fascinated with stitch and fabric, and the potential for mark-making with thread and dye. Making quilts as wall-hangings is currently a focus, with subjects ranging from abstractions of color and pattern, to the landscape and its textures. 

    As a member of the Muncie Art Guild I’ve been showing work locally for the past several years, as well as with the Pendleton Artists Society. A quilt with patterns of tree bark was included in and international exhibit in Oregon in 2019, and last year an embroidered print was shown at the Indianapolis Art Center.

    Michelle Duran:
    Michelle Duran is an art historian whose interests span the material and spiritual worlds, and these interests are reflected in some of the items she makes in miniature: votive candles, tarot decks, ouija boards, and magnets. She also sells hoodoo oils, incense, and jewelry. this week she will have a limited selection of hand embroidered dishtowels for sale. she is a strong believer in the power of rhinestones and glitter and the good madness that is art.

    Mattie Ewing:
    Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work.

    Debra Gindhart:
    Out of the ARCHIVES. Archival artworks by Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker and visual arts educator. The Gindhart Collection curated, for March’s  First Thursday at Madjax Muncie. Wallart is aerosols, acrylics and or assemblages. Enjoy the extraordinary social commentary messages in paint and found objects, including "An Armed Society is a Polite Society", One Man’s Trash is Another Women’s Awakening”, “Coloured Countenances”, "Mixed Messages", "Cancer Mill", "Folklore", "Polyester Flora", “Dismal Disney” and more.

    Neal Soley:
    Based in Indianapolis, The Tulip Factory is a company created by Neal Soley. This company campaigns Soley’s exploration of self expression throughout the use of different mediums. The collection of works are representative of periods throughout Soley’s exploration. Please join the artist Thursday, February 4 on the second floor of the Madjax Building. Practice social distancing and kindly wear a mask when needed, and view a collection of paintings on canvas, works on paper, and more.

    Cicada Science + Listening Session

    Saturday, June 5, 11:00 am–12:15 pm 

    Ball State University, Christy Woods

    Free parking is available at the Cooper Life Sciences parking lot on Riverside Ave. Participants will meet outside of the Charles W. Brown Planetarium.

    This indoor and outdoor session will include an introduction to the science of cicadas and singing insects led by the Ball State Environmental Education Center. Afterward, Mallea will lead a series of listening exercises to facilitate slower, more attentive listening to our surroundings as an entrypoint to the project and a means to tune into our greater ecosystem and non-human neighbors. Participants are required to wear masks.

    Vocal Workshop

    Saturday, June 5th, 1:00 – 2:00 pm

    Ball State University, Fine Arts Building AR 217 (David Owsley Museum of Art Building)

    John Vessels, Ball State University Instructor of Theater, Dance, and Musical Theatre, will lead participants in a series of vocal exercises to explore the capacity of the human voice and unusual sound making. We will practice breathing, noise making, and inhabiting another sensibility. No prior singing or choral experience is required. Session will be in a large, indoor space to allow physical distancing.     PlySpace, the artist in residence program of The Muncie Arts and Culture Council is excited to announce Open Curiosity: An Exploration of Material as Metaphor. This workshop series will be led by Summer 2021 Virtual PlySpace Resident Carrie Dickason. The free, four-part workshop series will take place via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, beginning Tuesday, July 20 and ending Thursday, July 29. The program is open to ages 18+ and all skill levels. Registration is required. Sign up today at: PlySpace.org/open-curiosity.

    Open Curiosity: An Exploration of Material as Metaphor, a four part online workshop, invites participants to release their expectations about “Art-making” and embrace process-driven, open-ended inquiries. Participants will use simple basketry techniques to consider relationships- both physically/structurally and metaphorically/philosophically. The sessions will include discussion and interaction among workshop participants, with facilitation by New Mexico-based artist, Carrie Dickason, and will culminate in an online Instagram exhibition with a map of participants’ locations and their individual works. Participants do not need to be based in Muncie in order to participate. The course is capped at 20 participants. 

     

    The purpose of this virtual workshop is to spark creative exploration and experimentation, opening and expanding it into everyday life. The content will include gentle guidance with prompts and support to consider inquiries such as: How can we use curiosity as a tool to stimulate growth and joy in our lives? What happens when we approach personal expression and interactions, with an open responsiveness? Can we use openness as an entry into helping ourselves and others to heal?

     

    This series of virtual workshops welcomes individuals 18+ and all skill levels. Participants are requested to commit to all four sessions as they will build upon one another, and because group participation and interaction is integral to the direction of the workshop and the unfolding of the content. Please note that this is not a product-driven, skill-based workshop. Participants are encouraged to experiment and take risks. Fiber processes are generally slow, and this is an introduction, so the intention is that participants will be compelled to continue their pursuits beyond the workshop and share their projects as they develop. Find an overview of each session as well as a suggested supply list on our website, PlySpace.org/open-curiosity.

    About the Artist:

    Carrie Dickason is a mixed-media artist whose experimental work is informed by observations of nature, combined with interests in the constructed environment and consumer culture. She has a BFA in Textiles from Indiana University, Bloomington and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art. This foundation combined with over a decade of working in hand-woven carpet and automotive upholstery restoration, informs her playful approach to use of materials and the cumulative development of site-specific installations. Some ongoing themes of inquiry include the contrasts between: Nature/Culture; Attraction/Repulsion; Organic/Synthetic; Permanence/Impermanence. 

     

    Dickason’s work has been exhibited at the Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Cranbrook Museum of Art, MI; Center for Maine Contemporary Art, ME; Teton ArtLab, WY; Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, MI; Burlington City Arts, VT; Interstate Projects, NYC; Grizzly Grizzly, PA- among others. She has presented and facilitated creative workshops at Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio, TX); University of Michigan (Ann Arbor); Center for Creative Studies (Detroit); and St. Olaf University (Northfield, MN). The free, four-part workshop series will take place via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, beginning Tuesday, July 20 and ending Thursday, July 29.     Open Curiosity: An Exploration of Material as Metaphor, a four part online workshop, invites participants to release their expectations about “Art-making” and embrace process-driven, open-ended inquiries. Participants will use simple basketry techniques to consider relationships- both physically/structurally and metaphorically/philosophically. The sessions will include discussion and interaction among workshop participants, with facilitation by New Mexico-based artist, Carrie Dickason, and will culminate in an online Instagram exhibition with a map of participants’ locations and their individual works. Participants do not need to be based in Muncie in order to participate. The course is capped at 20 participants. 

     

    The purpose of this virtual workshop is to spark creative exploration and experimentation, opening and expanding it into everyday life. The content will include gentle guidance with prompts and support to consider inquiries such as: How can we use curiosity as a tool to stimulate growth and joy in our lives? What happens when we approach personal expression and interactions, with an open responsiveness? Can we use openness as an entry into helping ourselves and others to heal?

     

    This series of virtual workshops welcomes individuals 18+ and all skill levels. Participants are requested to commit to all four sessions as they will build upon one another, and because group participation and interaction is integral to the direction of the workshop and the unfolding of the content. Please note that this is not a product-driven, skill-based workshop. Participants are encouraged to experiment and take risks. Fiber processes are generally slow, and this is an introduction, so the intention is that participants will be compelled to continue their pursuits beyond the workshop and share their projects as they develop.     About the Artist:

    Carrie Dickason is a mixed-media artist whose experimental work is informed by observations of nature, combined with interests in the constructed environment and consumer culture. She has a BFA in Textiles from Indiana University, Bloomington and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art. This foundation combined with over a decade of working in hand-woven carpet and automotive upholstery restoration, informs her playful approach to use of materials and the cumulative development of site-specific installations. Some ongoing themes of inquiry include the contrasts between: Nature/Culture; Attraction/Repulsion; Organic/Synthetic; Permanence/Impermanence. 

     

    Dickason’s work has been exhibited at the Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Cranbrook Museum of Art, MI; Center for Maine Contemporary Art, ME; Teton ArtLab, WY; Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, MI; Burlington City Arts, VT; Interstate Projects, NYC; Grizzly Grizzly, PA- among others. She has presented and facilitated creative workshops at Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio, TX); University of Michigan (Ann Arbor); Center for Creative Studies (Detroit); and St. Olaf University (Northfield, MN). Her studio practice has been supported widely, by The Corporation of Yaddo; The Santa Fe Art Institute; Hemera Foundation; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts; Vermont Studio Center; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; and Taliesin West, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
