PlySpace and the Muncie Arts and Culture Council invite you to an artist lecture by PlySpace Spring 2020 Fellows, Valerie Skakun and P. Spadine, on Tuesday, February 18th, from 5-6 PM in AJ225.

Skakun and Spadine have been working as collaborative partners since 2017. The philosophy of Skakun’s recent body of work began the moment she was struck by a car while on her bike and left unable to walk for a year. She has explored sculptures as objects of ritual and labor, ranging from time-based devotions to endurance trainings in order to transform mental and physical states of being. She received an MFA from Hunter College in 2019, and a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2009. Spadine has worked under Ashcan Orchestra, a pen name and performance ensemble as a vehicle for his audio/visual experiments since 2007. Informed by a sense of wonder, his work has sought to emulate, celebrate, and demystify the laws that govern the physical universe. Together they work in the realm in which the physicality of sculpture and sound overlap. Skakun and Spadine seek to explore the dual nature of labor and play, as a way to engage the world of wonder within the viewer through a physical catalyst.

While in residence at PlySpace, Skakun & Spadine will be researching stronger materials and building prototypes of new working components for their series of modular sound sculptures, which refer to an “organ” as both body part and musical instrument and require physical use of the entire body to play. They will be working with Assistant Professor Rachel Cohn and her 4d students at Ball State University to design and build pump organs which generate sound through bodily motions. The collaboration will culminate in a public performance featuring the ensemble of sound sculptures on April 2nd, first Thursday, at Madjax.

That One Film Festival Celebrates Experimental Filmmakers During Two-Day Event

This September 11th and 12th marks the return of That One Film Festival, Muncie’s own biennial experimental film festival. The two-day event will be a free livestreaming event available online where viewers can participate in the livestream content.

The event is produced by students in an immersive learning course at the Ball State University School of Art, with artistic directors Associate Professor Maura Jasper and Assistant Professor Kristin Reeves, in partnership with the Muncie Arts and Culture Council.

That One Film Festival celebrates the work of moving image artists from around the globe. The festival specializes in experimental, no/low budget, and avant-garde film and video art. This year, more than 275 films were submitted to That One for consideration. Of those submissions, 36 individual films have been selected for this year’s program, in addition to screenings of work by the festival’s two jurors, Karissa Hahn and Laura Parnes, and a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris.

This event is rated PG-13 for strong language, and viewer discretion is advised. All events are Eastern Standard Time.

The Opening Night stream begins at 5:45 PM on Friday, September 11th with an introduction by festival Master of Ceremonies Dennis Everette, and Muncie Arts and Culture Council Executive Director Erin Williams. The program will begin at 6:00 PM with a selection of work by Karissa Hahn, PlySpace Virtual Resident and co-juror at this year’s festival, followed by two one-hour programs. The screenings will end at 9:15 PM, after which there will be a performance by filmmaker Michael Morris. The event will conclude at 10:00 PM. The entire program is livestreamed at thatonefilmfestival.com and is free to view.

The festival will continue on Saturday, Sept. 12. Beginning at 11:30 AM, five one-hour programs will be presented throughout the day and evening, as well as a screening of work by New York artist and co-juror Laura Parnes. Viewers can tune in to the stream at any time. Each program will be followed by a short intermission. There will be a scheduled dinner break in the livestream from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Join PlySpace (plyspace.org) and Ball State University School of Art for the visiting artist lecture for PlySpace Resident Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado. Diacon-Furtado will speak about his work and answer questions about his practice and time spent in Muncie at the PlySpace Residency, a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (munciearts.org). 

This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM-7PM via Ball State School of Art Live (https://sites.bsu.edu/artlive/). A live Q&A will follow the lecture. Attendees can view the lecture for free. 

Over the last 3 weeks, Diacon-Furtado has worked with 2D Foundation students at Ball State University School of Art in a virtual collaboration. Our Patterns, a project spanning 6 separate classes and including over 100 student participants who developed pattern-based works to create a community “quilt” of patterns, visible on Instagram (@ourpatterns_Muncie). The public is encouraged to follow the progress of this project online, which will culminate in a projected exhibition on the exterior of the PlySpace building on First Thursday, November 5th.

Diacon-Furtado is an internationally recognized and award-winning Brazilian and American artist and designer who has exhibited globally in venues including the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture. His design work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times and Dwell magazine, and he is a founding partner of the New Orleans based arts-focused design studio opossum (itsopossumtime.com).

PlySpace is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council in collaboration with Ball State University School of Art and Sustainable Muncie Corporation, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

The National Tour of The Price is Right Live, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 14 at Emens Auditorium, has been postponed to January 29, 2021. Patrons are encouraged to keep their tickets which will be honored at the rescheduled date.

PlySpace, an immersive Artist-in-Residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, is hosting four community panel discussion webinars as part of the series: The Creative Use of Difference. Each panel will feature artists, both local and national, who are using their respected art forms to creatively bring awareness to societal issues such as racial injustices, sexism, and more. These hour-long discussions will be in collaboration with Atlanta-based artist Indya Childs as she develops a new work, entitled "Peace, Love, Dance" with Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance students. The semester-long project will culminate in a dance film, choreographed by Indya and the students in response to the Creative Use of Difference series. The film will be completed and will premiere later this spring, details forthcoming. All discussions in the Creative Use of Difference series will be held online, are free, and open to the public. Mearns has had a diverse range of professional experiences, from his roles as a federal prosecutor and trial lawyer to his second career in academia, which has included his administrative positions as a dean, a provost, and a university president. In this session, he will reflect on several of the most valuable leadership lessons he has learned over the course of his career, and he will share how those lessons inform his work on behalf of Ball State.

This program is ideal for people interested in learning more about how to be effective leaders and how to develop and utilize leadership skills on the job that will help in the advancement of their careers.

ABOUT OUR FACILITATOR

President Geoffrey S. Mearns serves as the 17th president of Ball State University.

After joining the University in May 2017, President Mearns helped to develop a new strategic plan. Destination 2040: Our Flight Path establishes a long-range vision for the University that sets priorities across five key areas: undergraduate excellence, graduate education and lifetime learning, community engagement and impact, scholarship and societal impact, and institutional and inclusive excellence.

During his tenure, President Mearns has pursued initiatives that have produced the largest freshman class in history and increased alumni engagement and fundraising. President Mearns has also strengthened the University’s relationship with the community, most notably through its innovative partnership with Muncie Community Schools.

President Mearns earned his undergraduate degree in English from Yale University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. After a legal career that included serving as a federal prosecutor, President Mearns held academic and administrative roles at Cleveland State University, and then he served as president of Northern Kentucky University. He and his wife, Jennifer, have five children.
