“The ART of #MeToo”: The movement heard around the world. We’ve all heard of women coming forward with their stories of mistreatment from men. Molestation is maturity in a moment a sort of soul murder. This problem, forbidden from conversation for so many years, stems from a variety of underlying factors at play. One in five women will be raped in her lifetime. Rape culture is prevalent in all communities worldwide. Women in power in the USA and Europe had the opportunity to spread their stories and combat the stigma of a woman standing up for herself. Just a century ago, the #MeToo movement would not have been possible.Local artist Debra Gindhart’s First Thursday exhibit “The ART of #MeToo” combines assemblage art and poetry. 

Gindhart also created a new line of Green Glam Studio jewelry earrings, Royal Pussies. Hand knitted loop scarves are also featured. Meet the artist during First Thursday’s gallery walk. Second floor galleries, 5-8pm

This CAP elective explored the generative act of architecture through the lens of craft. Investigations took positions on technique, authorship, as well as translations between drawing and imaging, technology and craft, aesthetics and information- not necessarily in opposition but in dialogue.  Exhibit also includes new work from English 421 History of the Book (Instructors: Rai Peterson, Book Arts Collaborative with Kim Miller, Tribune Showprint) as well as students’ continued explorations. Ron Richcreek has discovered that being a potter during a pandemic offers dual benefits:  additional opportunities for creative ideas and sanity. Throwing Cone 10 porcelain has been a new challenge and has brought artistic rewards.  Most recently, he has exhibited at the Richmond Art Museum Juried Show (RAM), IU Med. Ball Hospital and Dandelion's Florist, as well as Instagram.  Check out his work @silverfoxartguy53.  He is ready for the Christmas Season with many new ceramic works.

'Tis the season for social commentary artwork from Debra Gindhart, longtime local artist and former visual arts educator has created WWJB TWO(What Would Jesus Buy 2) a visual look at the consumerism that plagues our planet and feeds our landfills. Techniques of found art, assemblage, and collage produce these telling topical images and wall art.

Debra's last First Thursday exhibit of 2020 will also include hand knitted infinity and cowl neck scarves. A collection of Gindhart fiber art combines thick and soft fibers to create colorful and functional wearable art. Some yarns are hand spun and unique.

Debra’s Green Glam Studio jewelry will feature pendants and recreated chains. Natural stones and art glass hanging off artistically assembled metallics. These pieces reinforce the artist’s personal and creative anthem of “real babes recycle”.

Shane Leffingwell: Artist Shane Leffingwell works with alcohol ink on ceramic tile, sandblasts and paints glass, makes reclaimed art and works with other mediums. This showing will spotlight alcohol inks on  coasters/coaster sets, trivets, spoon rests, individual tiles for display, and paperweights at the Madjax Studios on the 2nd floor from 5-8PM.  He even does light switch and outlet covers!  Leffingwell’s art focuses mostly on abstract images that bring to mind a different idea to each person.  Prices range from $2 to $100.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts will be hosting the Opening Reception for "A Tribute to Glass,” an exhibit that will be held in our Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery from 5- 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 4. This gallery is located on the second floor of the Cornerstone Center for the Arts building. Local artist Terrika Clark challenges visitors to see glass differently with her work. She uses acrylic on canvas along with crushed glass to create each piece. We look forward to welcoming guests into our building, but request that visitors follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Heatherly worked at Muncie Community Schools for more than two decades before retiring in 2011. Since that time, he has been pursuing his passion for oil painting. His hard work at honing his painting skills has paid off with success as he has won several awards for his paintings in the past ten years. In 2019 he won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Show. 

Heatherly prefers to paint people, landscapes and buildings. His wartime experience also influences his artwork.  Heatherly is a Vietnam War Army Veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division from 1970 to 1971. He has created several paintings of soldiers in action from this time period. One of these paintings is proudly on permanent display in the Yorktown American Legion. 

As the Muncie Artists Guild’s Artist of the Month, Tom Heatherly’s oil paintings will be on display for the entire month of March at Northwest Bank on East Charles, at Vera Mae’s Bistro on South Walnut, at Old National Bank on South Madison Avenue and at Let There Be Art on White River Boulevard in Muncie.

Opening Reception for Fire an Art Exhibition by Scott Livingston
Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday

In his debut exhibit, local artist Scott Livingston shares what remains of his abstract pieces after they've been engulfed in flames. His show, Fire, will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 4, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, March 26. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time.

Drawing and making things have been strong lines of continuity for me in a life that has otherwise been nomadic and varied. I recently retired from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ball State where I taught drawing and graphics, and design and other professional courses, similar teaching loads as at my prior two universities, at Illinois and Cornell. This followed a mid-life career change from practicing architecture, and a realization  that the in between spaces were of more interest to me than the buildings. Two years in  graduate school in landscape architecture were a wonderful renewal, and a return to drawing and making again.

 With full-time teaching aside now, there has been time to do both. Sketching with ink, pencil and Conte crayons has led to doing portraits of friends’ horses in pastel, as well as to turning some drawings into linocuts and prints. 

I’ve also grown fascinated with stitch and fabric, and the potential for mark-making with thread and dye. Making quilts as wall-hangings is currently a focus, with subjects ranging from abstractions of color and pattern, to the landscape and its textures. 

As a member of the Muncie Art Guild I’ve been showing work locally for the past several years, as well as with the Pendleton Artists Society. A quilt with patterns of tree bark was included in and international exhibit in Oregon in 2019, and last year an embroidered print was shown at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Michelle Duran is an art historian whose interests span the material and spiritual worlds, and these interests are reflected in some of the items she makes in miniature: votive candles, tarot decks, ouija boards, and magnets. She also sells hoodoo oils, incense, and jewelry. this week she will have a limited selection of hand embroidered dishtowels for sale. she is a strong believer in the power of rhinestones and glitter and the good madness that is art.

Mattie Ewing:
Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work.

Debra Gindhart:
Out of the ARCHIVES. Archival artworks by Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker and visual arts educator. The Gindhart Collection curated, for March’s  First Thursday at Madjax Muncie. Opening Reception for Fly: an Art Exhibition by Debra Shidler:
Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday. In this upcycled exhibit, artist Debra Shidler explores the world of flying creatures and the organic patterns within them. Her show, Fly, will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 1, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, April 30. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time. This event is free and open to the public, but visitors are asked to follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Ron Richcreek is a Yorktown native living in Daleville, Indiana, who has been studying and making functional pottery for more than a dozen years. Recently, Ron has been exploring Cone 10 porcelain and his finished works have been well-received - selling out immediately.  His work is currently exhibited in Minnetrista's Juried Art Show and displayed for sale at IU Med. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will feature the remaining paintings of Jim Faulkner, opening Thursday April 1, 5 – 8 pm.  During the show we will gather the community’s memories of the beloved painter.

Jim Faulkner's dedication, sensitivity, and skill as a painter for more than 50 years made him one of the most revered artists in our region and statewide. On January 29, 2021 Jim passed away at 86.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to offer about a dozen of his paintings in our gallery and our online store located on our website. These make up the remainder of his completed works.

The show will open on Thursday April 1, 5 – 8 pm and remain on view through May 28. During the show we encourage guests to share their memories of Jim in a journal which can be passed on to family and friends.  Because of Covid restrictions no refreshments will be served during the event.

During his career, Jim’s paintings defined East Central Indiana's open landscapes, weathered buildings, and tree lines. His images are witness to the constant winds, shifting bedrock, and changing rural environment of Indiana.

Missy Camille:
Art has always been a part of me. I didn't always share that part of me. Creating was therapy. My work didn't seem “good enough” to show the world. Something changed though. Art should never be hidden for fear of it being judged. Painting is my voice. I don't write or sing, but I want my art to be heard and understood. Since it is my passion, I would love to talk to you about it.  Sharing my art is as important to me now, as creating it. Portraiture is my passion. I will be showcasing my portrait work in a variety of mediums. Many of which have never been shown. Portrait work is sometimes not well received, and not understood. I create and share it anyway. Texture is a favorite of mine, so acrylic and oil paints are my most used medium. Watercolor and ink are a close second. Charcoal and pencil are my go to. My sketchbooks are many!  Hope to see you there!

Michelle Duran:
Michelle Duran is a maker who specializes in miniatures of the mysterious (tarot cards, ouija boards, crystal balls) and related jewelry, as well as the traditional art of embroidery. She can custom tailor dishtowel or apron colors to match any kind of culinary décor. 

Mattie Ewing:
Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Neon Trippy art, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work. Their new business name is EmoGypsy Pride N' More.

Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker and visual arts educator will feature her Green Glam Studio jewelry for April’s First Thursday at Madjax Muncie. Enjoy the whimsical and beautiful statement jewelry, necklaces, pendants, and earrings. Found objects, estate baubles, thrift store finds, as well as the boxes of beads and findings kind folks gift her combined with design and creativity result in one of a kind accessories. Sarah Shaffer:
“Body of Work,” a collection of paintings by Sarah Shaffer, is inspired by the inner workings of the human body. From the microbiology of bones to expressively painted organs to neurological pathways, this series explores what we are made of. “Body of Work” will be on display at MadJax in the second floor galleries with an opening on Thursday, April 1 from 5-8 pm.

Neal Soley:
Based in Indianapolis, The Tulip Factory is a company created by Neal Soley. This company campaigns Soley’s exploration of self expression throughout the use of different mediums. The collection of works are representative of periods throughout Soley’s exploration. Please join the artist Thursday, February 4 on the second floor of the Madjax Building. Practice social distancing and kindly wear a mask when needed, and view a collection of paintings on canvas, works on paper, and more.

Jill Palumbo has been an artist at heart since her earliest memories. She started selling beaded macramé jewelry in local gift shops as a middle schooler. She now designs her own award-winning beads in polymer, writes articles, and teaches workshops. You will find her creations today at the Minnetrista Orchard Shop.

Palumbo’s love of art intersects with her appreciation of cultures and understanding through communication. Her career as a teacher of French, Japanese, and Spanish smoothed her way to interact with polymer artists around the globe. Buoyed by her successes in the international community, Palumbo ventured into her local art community as a member of the Muncie Artist Guild.

Palumbo takes her citizenship in the world seriously, and her artwork often reflects her struggles to help others. She works through her feelings in glass and acrylic as well as her longtime favorite, polymer.    She is also drawn to the healing experiences only nature can provide.

Jill Palumbo’s artwork and articles have been published in the Star Press, Polymer Café Magazine, and M Magazine. She is currently working on a mosaic project commissioned by Ball State University for the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse.

Please join us at the Muncie Makes Lab for an exhibition of the work of Ball State's “ART 370: Glass Design: Technology and Industry” immersive learning course from 5-8pm.  

ART 370 is a new transdisciplinary immersive learning class that exposed and explored technological advances in the renowned regional glass industry. Students and faculty from the School of Art and the Department of Architecture engaged in material research, interviews, and insights from leaders in glass industry, award winning public artists, and local community arts leaders. Students' research led to the development of multiple new ‘Donor Wall’ proposals for Minnetrista as well as rethinking design objects in the era of a pandemic.

Local artist and DJ - DJ Jannell, will have a bevy of rad artwork on display in the Fur In Focus studio - located inside and adjacent to The Muncie Map Co. 111 E. Adams. Art will be displayed 5-8pm. Fur In Focus will also have photography displayed of past furry clients. Along with some stunning new works, DJ Jannell will have some older pieces to showcase and a dope mix playing for your pleasure. Light refreshments provided. Muncie Mystery

Do you have the brains, heart and courage to solve the Muncie Mystery?

A crime – pretend crime, of course – has been committed and we need YOUR help finding the culprit and the “weapon” used.

Join fellow citizen CSI: Emerald City investigators for the second Muncie Mystery during First Thursday on May 6 in downtown Muncie.

According to reports, a break-in has occurred at the Wizard of Oz’s secret Muncie laboratory in the “Emerald City” neighborhood. The suspect, despite several warnings to pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, entered the restricted area. The Wizard confronted the suspect and suffered a blow to his noggin but has not been able to identify the perpetrator.

Six primary suspects - Wicked Witch of West, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion, Glinda the Good Witch and The Mayor of Munchkinland - were spotted near the scene at the time of the crime. And, lucky for our eagle-eyed investigators, several pieces of evidence were left behind.

Between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, investigators of all ages are invited to visit 10 participating downtown businesses. At each location, you will have the chance to question suspects about their whereabouts during the time of the break in and look at crime lab reports on several possible “weapons.”

Participating businesses are YWCA, Aspect 6, Kirk's Bike Shop, Inland Design, Vahalla (21+), IVY Tech (Fisher Building), Twin Archer, Mama Bonds and The Fickle Peach (21+).

You can download a Crime Tracker – with map - now at www.muncieneighborhoods.org/munciemystery. You may also pick one up during First Thursday at Canan Commons or Dave’s Alley.

Crime Trackers must be turned in at Canan Commons by 6:30 p.m. The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Canan Commons at 7.

Investigators will also be able to enjoy tethered hot air balloon “rides” and meet a Horse of a Different Color and the Runway for Rescues animals at Canan Commons during the event. The hot air balloon will be set up for photo opportunities at 5 and begin tethered rides at 6:45 p.m.

Investigators who correctly identify the criminal and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including 1 Overnight Stay at the Courtyard Marriott;

The Future of Work
The Future of Work will be set up at Madjax to distribute free STEM kits with materials for participation in a Virtual Workshop led by Ivy Tech instructors. We will also have registration for summer programming for youth and adults. 1st floor, Madjax.

Alison Beam-Hindman is the Muncie Artists Guild’s featured Artist of the Month for May. 

Growing up on a small farm in Northern Indiana, Beam-Hindman learned an appreciation for the natural world from her father who also sparked her early interest in astronomy by pointing out stars by name in the clear night skies of Starke County Indiana.

Beam-Hindman earned a Bachelor of Science in technology from Purdue University North Central, and 22 years later, earned a Master of Arts in adult education from Ball State University. After retiring from Ivy Tech Community College, Beam-Hindman took time to pursue an early interest in art. She is a self-taught artist who paints in acrylics, and as a member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2015, she credits the other Guild members with providing the mentoring and friendship she needed to hone her artistic skills.

Years ago, Beam-Hindman entered the open division competition at the Delaware County Fair with a painting on cardboard in poster paints and was encouraged when the space-themed painting won first place! In 2010, Beam-Hindman’s painting of Voyager II won 2nd place for Imaging, plus the Judges’ Choice Award, at the Great Lakes Astronomical League’s competition for photographers and imagers.  Her triptych paintings of Comet McNaught won first place for Imaging at the Annual Indiana Family Star Party in 2012. Several of her space-themed paintings have also won awards at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Shows. 

Beam-Hindman’s lifelong interest in astronomy and space exploration inspires much of her artwork, as do works by space artists Chesley Bonestell, David Hardy and astronaut/artist Alan Bean. Beam-Hindman is also a charter member of the Muncie Astronomy Club since 2000 and is active in the Club’s community outreach program on science education, where she uses art to promote and enhance the program.

BREAK-ROOM is a collection of queer works exploring relationships. Five graduating seniors from Ball State’s School of Art collaborated to curate a selection of recent work that takes up space and breaks up rooms. The work investigates a wide range of topics surrounding relationships: friendship, family, trauma, queerness, space and time. 

Show opens First Thursday but will continue through May 9 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm each day.
