3:00pm to 4:30pm @
David Owsley Museum of Art, Ball State University
Recital Hall
The Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MACC) is dedicated to establishing Muncie's identity as a center for cultural offerings. We are building a network for artists and cultural institutions and advocating for the arts as an economic development engine for our region. MACC incorporated in 2011 and is currently preparing a strategic plan.
Group Discussions are being conducted to learn as much as possible about Muncie's arts and cultural community; the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for enhancement and the appropriate role MACC might undertake to identify needs and help build upon existing strengths.
Your perspective is a very important.
If you are unable to participate, we invite you to send comments to Jackie Johnston, Muncie Arts & Culture Council Executive Director, Jackie@munciearts.org
All discussions will be led by Elaine Fisher, Special Projects Director Emerita of Ball State’s Building Better Communities. Funding for MACC’s strategic planning process is underwritten by the Indiana Arts Commission.

The Paintings of Casey Parmerlee
Local artist Casey Parmerlee has been very interested in spatial, geometric landscapes and feels that this has guided her most popular work over the past few years. Because of this, Casey has really focused in on what she wants the viewer to take away from her paintings. She has chosen to refine her color palette and work with non-traditional mediums on canvas, such as charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencils, and using gesso as a medium instead of a ground and sizing as one might typically use it.
Casey states that the overall look and feel of the work in this exhibit is more refined than her previous work of the same subject matter. This body of work tends to conjure feelings of grandness and sophistication with its rigid lines and frame work, but still feels organic and tied to nature. It is this balance of geometry with the organic that she finds interesting.

Annual Salon ShowTwo dozen area artists will hang works for the holidays at Gordy Fine Art and Framing. Opening with a reception on Thursday, December 5th, the exhibit will continue through January 31, 2014 and includes oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings, original prints, pottery, jewelry, photographs and sculpture pieces.
“We’ve added a few artists to our award-winning lineup this year, which helps keep the event fresh and interesting,” offers gallery director, Braydee Euliss. “The works range from traditional oil paintings of landscapes and florals to more modern and abstract pieces and figurative works.” She continues, “We encourage guests to ask questions. Art openings definitely have a learning component, and we all love to talk about art.”
A salon show differs from typical exhibits by allowing pieces to be removed from the show at time of sale. They are replaced by other pieces or the exhibit is rearranged. This allows patrons to consider art for holiday decorating or gift giving, concepts that also support the artists, who appreciate selling their work before year’s end.
Artists in the Salon Show include Kim and Scott Anderson, Sue Beach, Carol Burt, David Dale, Eric Ernstberger, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Charlene George, Brian and Genny Gordy, Corey Hagelberg, David and Sarojini Johnson, Suzanne Lambert, Paul Laseau, Cheryl Anne Lorance, Shonet Martin, Jan McCune, Alan Patrick, John Peterson, Marty Price, Margie Prim, Kyle Rees, Carol Strockwasson and Lynette Waters. A reception for the artists will be held during the monthly First Thursday art event on Thursday, December 5, 2013, from 5 to 8 PM. The artists in attendance will be introduced and a short talk about the show will be given at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.
The exhibit may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment.
Ivy Tech Fisher Building
345 S HighThe staff and students of Ivy Tech’s School of Education are excited to announce that we will be hosting a “Parent’s Night Out” at the Fisher Building from 5:30 to 8:00pm on December 5th. We have an exciting “Winter Wonderland” themed night planned for children whose parents are attending First Thursday events. This event was created because we have a genuine concern for the availability of proper childcare during the First Thursday events. We also understand that many parents in the surrounding area could benefit from a fun night out, all while supporting the community.
Safe activities and a snack will be provided for children while their parents enjoy Muncie’s First Thursday festivities. Registration is open to the first 75 children ages 4-12. Please contact Erin Donovan at edonovan2@ivytech.edu for registration forms or for more information about the event. Thank you for considering the safety of the children in our community.

The Work of Heather Haviland and Melissa CummingsHeather Haviland has a BFA with an emphasis on photography from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. With her love for graphic design and painting, she incorporates these elements into her artwork. Her inspiration comes from an interest in melding folklore and mythology with fantasy and surreal portraiture. Her background as a floral designer has also influenced the meaning, structure, and vibrant colors seen in her work. This quote from Joseph Campbell best describes what Heather strives to capture in her photographs, “I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.” Her past work has been described as “fantastical & imaginative” challenging the viewer to explore content reminiscent of fairy stories from a darker age.
A self-taught artist, Melissa Cummings has been the recipient of several honors including winning two scholastic art awards from the State of Indiana. “People have been my most inspiring subject matter. The eyes are my greatest emphasis when I am working on a portrait painting.” Sought after for her portraits Melissa is re-emerging with a new love for surrealistic abstracts in oil. “This change in genre is allowing me to make creations based from my own emotions. It is raw energy.” Her work is eclectic and she enjoys using a variety of mediums and styles.
Select works will be available for purchase.

YART - A Yard Sale for Art!
5:00pm to 12:42pm @
Downtown
Old National Lot
The Spring 2014 Muncie YART will be held on Thursday, May 1st (5-9pm) and is open and free to everyone! :)
YART is a Yard Sale for Art. We keep the yard sale vibe going by having the sale outdoors and keeping all art priced under $40. I hold YART twice a year, in May and October, in Downtown Muncie, in the parking lot of Old National Financial on the corner of Walnut and Charles Streets.
There is no charge to sell at YART, and YART does not take a cut of your sales. Each artist has about a parking space to set up in. Artists manage their own sales and set up their own displays. It's often very windy, so keep that in mind. Many artists make art live during YART!
YART is an all-volunteer/no-budget event and I am very grateful to Cheryl Crowder of the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership for support and the donation of YART poster printing, Old National Financial for the donated use of their parking lot, and to The Artist Within, Inc. for being great YART neighbors!
The 2014 Spring Muncie YART will be held at the same time as the May 2014 First Thursday Gallery Walk throughout Downtown Muncie. There is a LOT going on with art shows, live music, food, and community fellowship. The Caffeinery has just opened across the street from the YART lot too. This will be a really fun night for everyone and it's great to support local artists!
Please "Share" this and encourage artists to sell at YART and buyers to shop at YART! :)

MACC Hosted First Thursday Reception for SONDER
5:00pm to 9:00pm @
PlySpace
608 E Main St.
Megan Lange, My Green Dino, neon
Muncie Arts and Culture Council is pleased to celebrate First Thursday, March 1, 2018 with an opening and closing reception for Sonder, an art exhibition from 5:00 – 9:00 PM at PlySpace, the soon-to-be new home for MACC located at 608 East Main Street in downtown Muncie. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
Produced in partnership with a Ball State University School of Art immersive learning course, the exhibition of student work gets its name from John Koenig, the creator of the “Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.” “Sonder” is a term coined by Keonig to describe the realization that each random passerby lives a life as vivid and complex as your own and that an epic story is continually unfolding invisibly around you. In this case, the exhibition Sonder explores and celebrates the inner worlds, passions, and inquiries of Ball State University students from varying formal disciplines and personal backgrounds.
In addition to producing the individual works of art, the students are also responsible for designing, curating, and installing the exhibition. Participating artists include: Alexis Brooks, Danielle Campbell, Mallory Creekmur, Veronica Debone, Michael Dorsey, Mikey Higgins, Megan Lange, James Lupkin, Rowan Mayo, Summer Moore, and Megan Sutton. The selected artworks represent a variety of 2D and 3D media including glass, ink and charcoal drawings, video, and ceramics. The artists will be present throughout the evening and available to answer questions and share insights about the program and individual works with guests.
Muncie Arts and Culture Council welcomes the public to this one-night-only First Thursday event in downtown Muncie. Parking is available in the lot immediately adjacent to the building. Entry to the exhibition is only permitted through the west-facing gallery door. For more information, please email info@munciearts.org

That One Film Festival is committed to supporting emerging and experimental creators, as well as engaging and educating audiences by facilitating film screenings and broadening an understanding of what moving image can be. The festival aims to contribute to the advancement of the art form and to broaden the understanding and appreciation of moving image in our region. More than 170 films were submitted from countries all over the world including Spain, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, India, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, South Africa, Sweden, Cambodia, Finland, France, Greece, China, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, and Australia. That One jurors are visual artist Liz Rodda from Texas, and writer, programmer and filmmaker Jon Dieringer, from Brooklyn. Both Liz and Jon will be presenting programs as part of That One. Filmmakers Kristin Reeves and Maura Jasper oversaw programming and artistic direction of the festival.
That One Film Festival launches in downtown Muncie with its festival headquarters located at PlySpace and all screenings held in the historic E.B Ball Auditorium at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. All opening night events on Friday, April 6th are free, open to the public, and appropriate for the entire family. Festivities begin at 6:30 PM with “Building Community Through Cinema,” a lecture by Screen Slate founder and esteemed artist Jon Dieringer, and continue with the first round of competitive screenings from 8:00 - 9:00 PM. Opening night will conclude with a reception for Social Study, an exhibition of lo-fi video work by festival juror, interdisciplinary artist, and Associate Professor of Expanded Media at Texas State University Liz Rodda, that compiles disparate images and audio encompassing a range of themes from the natural and the artificial to pleasure and danger. The reception takes place at festival headquarters in the PlySpace Gallery from 9:00 – 11:00 PM. Guardian Brewing Company will provide beer and light refreshments will be served. Those planning to attend Friday’s free activities are encouraged to RSVP at Film Freeway.
Day two of the festival continues Saturday, April 7th with ticketed programs and intermissions from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Individual program tickets and all-access passes can be purchased in advance through Film Freeway or in-person at PlySpace throughout the festival. Fire and Brimstone Pizza will be parked at PlySpace during lunch and dinner. Festival awards will be announced at the closing party after a live video performance by Muncie-based artist Karl Erickson. This reception is free, open to the public, and will be held at the PlySpace Gallery from 10:00 PM – Midnight. Again, Guardian Brewing Company will provide beer and light refreshments will be served.
Start your festival experience by visiting the headquarters in PlySpace Gallery located at 608 East Main Street in downtown Muncie. That One Film Festival parking is available in the lot behind Cornerstone Center for the Arts and immediately adjacent to PlySpace. The MITS trolley will provide free rides throughout downtown for attending film festival guests. Nick Witten and Danielle Joy Graves host a professional art practice seminar at PlySpace.
PlySpace Resident Artists Danielle Joy Graves and Nick Witten invite high school and foundation-level college student artists to join them for a free day-long workshop on professional practice for artists and contemporary art issues. The workshop will take place on Saturday, April 28th, starting at 10:00 AM.
Please register through Eventbrite for this FREE event by April 27th to reserve a spot. Click below for tickets and a comprehensive schedule for the day.https://www.eventbrite.com/e/professional-art-practice-pancake-extravaganza-tickets-45252947785?aff=efbeventtix
The workshop will be geared toward students looking to pursue a career in fine art. Through discussions, presentations, and demonstrations, participants will be introduced to resume building, careers and alternative jobs in the art world, and contemporary art practice. A pancake breakfast will be provided (gluten and dairy free).
In the afternoon, students are also invited to join a group critique of participant's artwork. Students will learn how to photograph their work for a professional portfolio, and the photographic documentation taken during the workshop will be published online for participants to use for future applications and websites. Nick and Danielle will also publish documentation of each critique online so students will be able to use that credential on their resumes.
The event is free and open to any students interested in art practice. Students are encouraged to bring a few pieces of work for the group critique and to have photographed during the demonstration. Participants are welcome to attend the entire day, or just the workshop they find most interesting. Breakfast is provided but please bring your own lunch.Danielle Joy Graves and Nick Witten are Indianapolis-based artists, collaborative partners, and co-curators of Sugar Space Gallery, a contemporary art gallery focused on emerging artists. Nick holds an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Sculpture from Herron School of Art and Design. He is an Adjunct Instructor at Herron and works with Big Car Collaborative. Danielle holds a BFA in Illustration from Herron School of Art and Design. She works as a professional artist. They are both current resident artists at PlySpace through the end of April.
