Switch Documentary at Ball State University
3:00pm to 12:42pm @
L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Ball State University
Cardinal Hall
ARCOS FILMS PRESENTS
Switch goes beyond the politics to deliver the straight answers on energy
Directed by Harry Lynch and Featuring Energy Expert Dr. Scott Tinker
Screening at Ball State University on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 3:00pm
Cardinal Hall, L.A. Pittenger Student Center – FREE and open to the public
Is fracking polluting our water? How dangerous is nuclear? Will gasoline prices continue to rise? Can we clean up coal? Can renewables really power our future?
Switch delivers straight answers to today’s most controversial energy questions, as energy visionary Dr. Scott Tinker travels the world, exploring leading energy sites from coal to solar, oil to biofuels, most of them highly restricted and never before seen on film. He seeks the truth from the international leaders of government, industry and academia, then cuts through the confusion to discover a path to our energy future as surprising as it is practical.
This screening is part of over 250 universities across the country participating in the GSA Switch Energy Awareness & Efficiency Program, which launched last fall at over 40 pilot schools with a student ambassador program, efficiency drive and screening of the film.
Audiences have called Switch “the first truly balanced energy film.” As no documentary before it, Switch has been embraced and supported by people across the energy spectrum: environmentalists and academics, fossil and renewable energy experts, scientists and economists.
“I took my students to a screening of SWITCH, and we spent most of the following class discussing it, a testament to its value as an educational tool. It was amazing...”
-- Amy Jaffe, Rice University Energy Program
“Every person in America should see and digest this film.”
-- Douglas Johnson, Statoil
“SWITCH really puts all the pieces together, and makes me optimistic for the future.”
-- Erin Geoffroy, Environmental Defense Fund
Switch and the GSA program are part of the Switch Energy Project (www.switchenergyproject.com), a multi-pronged effort to build a global understanding of energy.
The project was created by Arcos Films, directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Harry Lynch and co-produced with energy expert Dr. Scott Tinker. It also includes a continually expanding website of 300 videos on the energy topics that drive our world; a primary school education program of videos and curricula co-developed with the American Geological Institute; and eventually a broadcast series to discover solutions to our most pressing energy challenges.
The Switch Energy Project is one of the world’s only resources where audiences can find objective, trustworthy energy answers, in an engaging, accessible video format.
About Dr. Scott Tinker:
Dr. Scott Tinker has been exploring energy for 30 years. His passion is bringing government, industry and academia together to solve some of the world’s toughest challenges. Toward that end he has given nearly 500 invited and keynote lectures in nearly 50 countries. Dr. Tinker is the Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and the State Geologist of Texas. He is a Professor holding the Allday Endowed Chair and the acting Associate Dean of Research in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Before coming to the Bureau, he worked for Marathon Oil’s research division.
About Harry Lynch:
For 17 years, Harry Lynch has been a documentary director, producer, writer, cinematographer and soundtrack producer, whose films include Switch, Unconventional, Recapturing Cuba, Ride Around the World and Making the Modern. Whitely Community "Reality Store"
5:15pm to 12:42pm @
Muncie Central High School
Kathie Onieal, along with the help of several other community members and an Honors class at Ball State, will be hosting a “Reality Store.” This event will give participants an opportunity to understand how the world works in regards to money, planning, choices, and priorities by moving them through a series of booths.
Eleven booths representing such things as entertainment, child care, and medical will be set up in two separate “Reality Stores,” one for children and the other for adults. Those participating in the event will first pick a job and then be assigned their salary. Throughout the experience, they will try to budget their lives based on these careers and salaries. This includes real-life concerns such as considering insurance, buying a home, and paying for other essential expenses. Our career fair will allow for children to learn how best to budget their money so that they can understand the importance of values and money management at a young age. It will also help adults considering a change in their lives a lesson in just what it takes to make it through those monthly expenses.
