The Muncie Mayor’s Arts Awards recognize the contributions to the cultural community by artists of all kinds, and organizations working in the arts to benefit the residents of Muncie.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing is promoting the 2021 Mayor’s Arts Awards program by presenting a show of visual art made by Award recipients from previous years.  Since 2015, awards have been given to 24 individuals and organizations. Thirteen of these are visual artists and we are proud to present their work beginning on the evening of ArtsWalk, October 7, 5-9 pm, to anticipate the 2021 Awards celebration in November.

The 13 artists are Jonathan Becker, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Ned Griner, Heidi Hale, Bob Hartley, Maura Jasper, Ann Johnson, Kim Miller, John Peterson, Michael Prater, Rachel Replogle, and Lynette Waters-Whitesell. 

Refreshments will be served. The show will remain on view until Saturday November 19. 

At 6:15, Erin Williams, Executive Director of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council will give a 10-minute presentation honoring this year’s nominees and previewing the Awards Ceremony held at Sursa Performance Hall on Ball State’s campus on Friday November 12 at 7:30.

Angel Gilette: Sci-fi Fantasy art with a grunge touch

Debra Gindhart: Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo’s November exhibit addresses Native American Indian Genocide Month. Altered thrift store art celebrating the native culture and focusing on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. We must begin reimagining the future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. 

Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall artwork that is pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art. The artist's Green Glam Studio jewelry TURKEY collection will also be featured. Fiber mart scarves will also be available. Meet the artist event is free and open to the public. 5-8pm 2nd floor. 

Charlie Kehoe: Silver Linings: Handmade bows and earrings 

Ron Richcreek: Potter Ron Richcreek will be returning to MadJax for the November First Thursday Art Walk. He will display functional handmade pottery for everyday use. Come to MadJax for a fun evening of entertainment and fun

Muncie Artist’s Guild

Lylanne Musselman is the Muncie Artists Guild Artist of the Month for November.

Musselman is a Delaware County native who graduated from Delta High School and Ball State University. Musselman has exhibited in juried art shows across the region, most recently in the 97th Hoosier Salon, Watercolor Society of Indiana, Ventures in Creativity, Wabash Valley Exhibition, and Minnetrista’s Annual Show, among others. She’s won over 110 awards since 1983, including winning Muncie Artist’s Guild Best of Show in 2020 with her pastel painting, “Cat Lover.” Currently, she has two pastel pieces that were juried into Biodiversity/Cultural Diversity at the Arts Center in Portland, IN, and she has work at the Fort Wayne Artist’s Guild Pop Up Gallery at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne.

Musselman is the current president of the Muncie Artists Guild where she’s been a member since 2017. She also is membership chair of Fort Wayne Artists Guild, and co-chair of their Community Arts Program. Musselman also serves on the board of Midwest Writers Workshop, where she is secretary. A Ball State Alumnae, she is an award-winning poet and playwright, so Musselman often incorporates words and poems into her work. She specializes in pastels, gouache, and acrylics with an emphasis on pet and people portraiture. Musselman has taught art classes privately and through area organizations.

Her paintings are on display at Old National Bank (Southside Branch), Northwest Bank (East Charles St.), Vera Mae’s Bistro, Rosebud Coffee House and Parlour Salon.

Join students who manage Book Arts Collaborative for a tour of their working museum shop and the opportunity to print and bind a functional, pocket-sized notebook. Operate a 19th-century printing press, pamphlet-stitch a notebook, and finish it off in our guillotine cutter and hydraulic corner rounder. Meet our students and mutually get to know one another as you enjoy this project together.

Light Up DWNTWN
Spread the Christmas cheer with galleries, restaurants, retailers, and neighbors throughout DWNTWN during December’s First Thursday! At 6:00 pm, join us in Canan Commons as we officially kick off the holiday season with the tree lighting. 

Then, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, there will be music & light shows at the top of every hour from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm! 

Amazing Elf Hunt
Some of Santa’s elves have arrived in Muncie!

Throughout the month of December, 80 elves will be working with DWNTWN businesses to prepare for Christmas. If you look closely at storefront windows, you might just spot them!

Can you find at least 25 elves? Fill in your Elf Tracker (coming soon for download at downtownmuncie.org/lightupdwntwn or to pick up from downtown business locations) with at least 25 of the possible 80 elves’ names and numbers and be entered to win one of five $100 cash prizes!

Return your completed Elf Tracker by:

Gindhart at Madjax
'Tis the season for social commentary artwork from Debra Gindhart Dragoo, longtime local artist and visual arts educator, turned curator and arts advocate m. She  has created WWJB THREE(What Would Jesus Buy 3)a visual look at the consumerism that plagues our planet and feeds our landfills. Techniques of found art, altered art, assemblage, and collage produce these telling topical images of wall art. This year’s collection is both telling and humorous.

Debra's last First Thursday exhibit of 2021 will also include hand knitted infinity and cowl neck scarves. A collection of Gindhart fiber art combines thick and soft fibers to create colorful and functional wearable art. Some yarns are hand spun and unique.

Debra’s Green Glam Studio jewelry will feature HO HO HO earrings and HO HO HO HEMP pendants to make your ugly Christmas sweater POP! These pieces reinforce the artist’s personal and creative anthem of “real babes recycle.”

Larry Gindhart
Join musician Larry Gindhart and experience the calm, gentle and luxurious, melodies of Native American Flutes, the harmonic and mystical sounds of RAV Vast melodic steel drums, and a variety of nature sounds. Relaxation, comfort and an easy peaceful feeling are hallmarks of this musical performance. Soothing, healing sounds and pleasing melodies speak to the heart as they renew, soothe and energize. 5:30-8:00pm

Neal Soley
Indianapolis artist Neal Soley will feature new work from his ongoing Tulip Factory project. Select pieces include works on canvas as well as a multitude of other mediums. Muncie Arts/ Plyspace welcome Plyspace Resident Jordan Delzell:

PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) welcomes Fall 2021 Resident Jordan Delzell. Jordan Delzell is a visual artist, researcher and recycler. Through foraging, collecting and scavenging material she reroutes items from the waste stream to sites of deep study and care. She creates objects, installations, images and interactions. While in residence Jordan will offer multiple opportunities to learn more about the art of paper recycling.

For First Thursday, Jordan Delzell will transform the PlySpace gallery (608 E Main Street, Muncie) into a recycling center where the Muncie community can drop off paper materials to be recycled and learn about paper-making with recycled materials. Stop by from 5-8pm. 

About the Artist:
Born in Morning Sun, Iowa, Jordan Delzell moved to New York City to study Integrated Design, a practice merging visual art, design and psychology. In 2017 she lived and worked at Elsewhere Museum, a museum and collective living experiment in a former thrift store in North Carolina. In 2019 she relocated to Kansas City, where she has continued work focused on paper-making with recycled paper. She has facilitated the collective recycling of paper through poetic workshops in unconventional spaces: garages turned schools and storefronts turned art galleries. She currently lives and works on an urban homestead where she grows food and fiber and is actively learning the art of seed-saving.

Bill Pattinson Studio:
The artistry of Bill Pattison captures those fleeting moments in time, which are truly Americana. This noted artist, and Indiana native, has gained international prominence and popularity with collectors. Pattinson studied art at LaSalle Institute, Washington School of Art, Portland, Oregon (correspondence) and Indiana Wesleyan University (formerly Marion College,) Marion, Indiana. He has exhibited and won over 100 awards through juried shows, is featured in numerous publications, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Hellenic Arts Institute, New York City. Pattinson is the President and Founder of Artistic Expressions Publishing Company, Inc. and the PBS Host “Art of Illusion.”

Debra Gindhart: Local artist Debra Gindhart Dragoo is channeling her inner Jean-Michel Basquiat in a new series GIRL POWER-Real Babes Recycle-#METOO. The art of #MeToo the movement heard around the world. Women coming forward with their stories of mistreatment from men, oftentimes a male relative. Molestation is maturity in a moment a sort of soul murder. This problem, forbidden from conversation for so many years, stems from a variety of underlying factors at play. One in five women will be raped in her lifetime. Rape culture is prevalent in all communities worldwide. Just a century ago, the #MeToo movement would not have been possible. Meet the artist during First Thursdays at Madjax. Second floor gallery, 5-8pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Ronn Brown – Portraits:
Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open an exhibition and sale of photographs by career fashion photographer Ronn Brown.  A native of East Central Indiana, Mr. Brown worked in Los Angeles for decades where his home studio focused on fashion as well as musicians, actors and models.  In earlier years, he attended Ball State in the art department and the photojournalism department.  He refined his studio skills while teaching classes at Jack’s Camera Shop in downtown Muncie.  In 2020, he returned to Muncie and Gordy is thrilled to present a selection of his portraits from the past six years.  Many were made during extended studio sessions in both Los Angeles and Muncie. Some are more spontaneous but all show Brown’s unique talent for drawing out emotions that are both expressive and contemplative. 

The opening party is free to the public on Thursday February 3 from 5 – 8 pm. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be on hand to engage with visitors. The show will remain on view until March 12.

Pati Sparks is a professional artist specializing in portraits and landscapes in oil and pastel. Showing talent as a child, she has developed this gift by studying fine art in various museums, by taking workshops, and by experimentation in her studio south of Muncie, Indiana. 

She had a successful art business in Indianapolis where her murals may be seen at J.W. Riley Hospital for Children, as well as many high-end homes and businesses. During this time, she also painted commissions in Naples, FL and Augusta, GA. Handmade ceramic tile and mosaic were other specialties from her studio. One of her hand-painted ceramic murals was featured on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath magazine. She also was commissioned as sole artist for Indianapolis Monthly's Dream Home, as well as being listed in Who's Who in Interior Design in the fine art section. 

Her paintings have been juried into many shows in the Midwest, including the Hoosier Salon. Awards include "Best of Show" as well as several first-place awards.

Ronn Brown, native of East Central Indiana, was based in Los Angeles for decades focused mainly on photographing musicians, actors and models, and often worked for producers in the film and music industries. The exhibition at Gordy is a selection of 20 images made in the past six years showing Mr. Brown’s unique talent for drawing out emotions that are both expressive and contemplative.  Most of the portraits on view were made working intensively with the model during extended studio sessions in both Los Angeles and Muncie. Exhibit will be up until April 2nd.

“Ronn Brown – Portraits”: Gordy Fine Art and Framing celebrates our exhibition of photographs by career photographer Ronn Brown. The exhibition opening party, with live music by Dan Wright and his guitar, is free to the public on Thursday March 3 from 5 – 8 pm.  Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be on hand to engage with visitors. The show will remain on view until April 2. 

A native of East Central Indiana, Mr. Brown was based in Los Angeles for over 20 years.  In Los Angeles, he focused mainly on photographing musicians, actors and models, and often worked for producers in the film and music industries. This kind of photography requires superb technical skills in operating the camera and lights, but he became highly sought after because of his bold imagination placing his subjects in inventive poses and dress. As his career progressed, he became increasingly interested in his rapport with the models and he would engage with them on a more personal level. To achieve specific lighting effects, he will rent rooms with windows positioned for just the right kind of natural light. The exhibition at Gordy is a selection of 20 images made in the past six years showing Mr. Brown’s unique talent for drawing out emotions that are both expressive and contemplative.  Most of the portraits on view were made working intensively with the model during extended studio sessions in both Los Angeles and Muncie.  Some are more spontaneous images of people he finds in public places. 

In 2020, Brown returned to Indiana and is now living in Muncie. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1997, he attended Ball State in the photojournalism and art departments. He credits much of his career success to Jack’s Camera Shop in Downtown Muncie where he taught lighting classes for 12 years. There refined his studio skills that made his eventual career one of many that were launched at Jack’s. 

The show will be on view with works for sale through April 2. Muncie Artist’s Guild: Artist-of-the-Month:
Jean McCauley is an award-winning artist who has been a member of the Muncie Artists Guild for over twenty years. She paints predominately in oils and pastels, but occasionally uses acrylics and watercolor. Her works are primarily landscapes, but she has more recently been painting a variety of dog portraits for family and friends. Jean has exhibited in many shows, receiving numerous awards, and is a member of Richmond Art Museum, Art Association of Henry County (Best of Show in 2021), Art Association of Randolph County (Awards of Excellence), Minnetrista, Muncie Art Students’ League (where she served as president in 2015 and co-president in 2021), and the David Owsley Museum of Art Alliance to name a few. Jean has studied with a wide variety of well known and highly respected artists, including Carol Strock-Wasson, Mary Ann Davis, and Pam Newell. She also has been a part of several interesting art projects throughout the years including the Muncie Artists Guild’s mural paintings (one located in City Hall, the other in the Arts & Journalism Building at Ball State University). In 2014 Jean was one of 14 artists selected to paint a violin for the 50th Anniversary of Emens Auditorium. In 2016 she was selected to participate in the Art of Sail Exhibition in Miami Florida which featured 30 artists from throughout the US. Each artist was provided a 36x36” segment of sailcloth from a retired jib sail. Additionally, Jean accompanied her son, David, on Artist in Residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and at the Santa Fe Art Institute. She continues to paint and show her work throughout central Indiana. Her paintings have been inspired by the beauty and simplistic aspects of nature and the world in which we live. Jean hopes her work evokes a pleasing and meaningful calm, capturing a sense of peace for a quieter, more thoughtful, almost forgotten time.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open an exhibition and sale of new paintings and sculpture by Alfredo Marín-Carle, Thursday April 7th, 5-8 pm. Marín-Carle joined the faculty at Ball State University in 1985. He is now Associate Professor Emeritus and resides in Indianapolis. Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

At 6:15 the artist will give a 10-15 minute presentation about his work and answer questions. 

Visions, the title of the exhibit, states simply that these works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies. “In the process of creation, I experience the Buddhist concept of interdependence,” says Marín-Carle, “that nothing exists on its own.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He uses stencils to apply forms and shapes, then rubs them with chemicals and carves deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. In this way he is exploring the creation and destruction always going on around us.

The show will be on view with works for sale through May 28.

The Muncie Artist’s Guild’s “Artist-of-the-Month for April” is Diane Burrell!

Diane is a painter, enamelist, and teacher, and her work will be on display in various locations throughout the city including Old National Bank, Northwest Bank, Hazelwood Hair Salon, Rosebud Coffee House, and Vera Mae’s.

Diane’s life as an artist has evolved over 50 years, yet the source of inspiration has remained constant. She is affected by her surroundings where she lives and works in her home studio on a lake in North Anderson.  The abundant ever-present fodder, wildlife, deer, blue herons, eagles, osprey, waterfowl, and fish provide a constant source of tranquility, and subject matter, which is revealed through the exploration and use of color in multiple layers of paint or enameling, (which is Glass fired onto metal at 1,450 degrees.) Other sources for subject matter come from her dedication to serving others through a food assistance program at Trinity Episcopal church.  She is energized by sharing her experiences through teaching and displaying her art.

Diane is a graduate from Ball State University in 1988. She continued her graduate work through 1995. She is an art teacher with an emphasis in painting and metal design and enameling.  Diane taught art at Daleville Community Schools and is retired from South Madison School Corporation in Pendleton Indiana.  She continues to teach classes in painting and enameling to all ages at Pendleton Artist Society, Gallery 119 on a regular basis. 

Diane has won numerous awards from, the Indiana State fair, Madison County Artist Society, Pendleton Artist Society, Muncie Artist Guild and was accepted in the Hoosier Salon.

William Mueller is an MFA Candidate at Ball State University. His thesis exhibition ‘Operating Cost’ is a collection of works with a narrative of how public relation, marketing, and advertising campaigns can persuade the public opinion and how we as consumers are to handle that information. The work is constructed primarily with cast concrete, a material that is known for its aesthetic value in modern architecture. This material is viewed as strong, resilient, and sustainable when in fact it can be brittle, require frequent maintenance, and is the third leading contributor to greenhouse gases. Our perception of the world around us is not always correct and quite often, it is shaped by firms that seek to do so for ulterior motives. This work challenges the viewer to think critically about the information that we take for granted.  

PlySpace

PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) in collaboration with the Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance, presents an open rehearsal by PlySpace ResidentFellow in Theatre,Derek Spencer.

Derek Spencer (Los Angeles, CA) will direct his cast and crew through an open rehearsal at 7pm on Thursday, April 7th in the PlySpace Gallery (608 E Main Street). In preparation for their upcoming performance, the cast is seeking audience members to join them for a brief interactive and immersive practice. No prior experience is required. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Masks are recommended, but not required. From 5pm to 7pm, the gallery will be open for the public to visit with Derek and the cast prior to their rehearsal. Light refreshments will be provided at this time.

While at PlySpace, Derek has been working with acting students from Ball State University’s Department of Theater and Dance, led by teaching professor Veronica Santoyo, to create a devised adaptation of The Eumenides by Aeschylus as his community collaborative project. This performance will be presentedto the public in a short run from April 21-24 at Cornerstone Centerfor the Arts. Learn more about the performance at plyspace.org/events.

Derek is the founder and artistic director of Ceaseless Fun, an LA-based immersive performance company operating since 2016. Select projects with Ceaseless Fun include: Everyone Agrees it’s about to Explode (2020), The Stars (2018), They Who Saw the Deep (2018), and Agnosia (2018). Derek served as a board member for the League of Experiential and Immersive Artists from 2017-2021 and currently runs an intermittent ensemble devising jam called Soft Focus. In 2014 he received his B.A. in Philosophy and Public Policy from the University of Chicago.

Presented by PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union and Cornerstone Center for the Arts, the 2022 Muncie Young Artist Exhibition Juried Art Competition is a celebration of young artists throughout Delaware County. 

The theme of the 2022 Young Artist Exhibition Juried Art Competition is “My Community”. Over the past two years, our understanding of community has shifted as every aspect of our lives has changed from the familiar, to the digital unknown, to something completely different, a mix of the before-times and the future. Through it all, we have had our community - whether it was learning something new with our classmates on Zoom, having socially distanced holiday dinners, or getting back outside to play with our friends for what felt like the first time in forever, we had each other to get through this unprecedented time in our lives.

Contestants are invited to submit up to two (2) works of art in the following categories: 2D (painting, drawing), 3D (sculpture, fiber arts, ceramics), and Intermedia (photography, videography, digital animation). No more than two submissions will be accepted per student. Entry is open through Friday, April 1st 2022.

Winning artworks will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery at Cornerstone Center for the Arts beginning May 5th. The YAE Awards Ceremony will take place Friday, May 20th from 5-8 PM in the Auditorium at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Debra Gindhart Dragoo is a installation, public artist, community curator, and arts advocate. Former visual arts educator and long-standing community arts program developer. Her aerosol inspirations come from Joy Hernandez-Butler, Banksy, and Mr. Brainwash. Excited for this opportunity to collaborate with Debra Mae Shidler. Shidler is exploring texture and rhythm through paint design. She has previously exhibited at Madjax and throughout East Central Indiana. Meet the artists, Second floor/Gindhart at Madjax, 5-8pm.

The Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month is Marta Stephens!
Her work will be on view at the following locations downtown: 
Vera Mae's, Northwest Bank, Old National, Rose Bud Coffeehouse, and Parlour.

Marta Stephens was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has called Indiana her home since the age of four. Her formal art education includes courses at U.C.L.A, the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and Ball State University.  However, while at Ball State, she changed her major and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Public Relations in 2001. 

Marta has been painting for over 40 years. She is an active member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2018 and has won several awards for her artwork. Her painting style has continuously evolved through experimentation and studying works of contemporary and traditional impressionist artists. She remains open to learning new techniques. Thus, this self-taught artist’s style is in a constant state of development. 

She has worked with a variety of mediums including ink, washes, clay, and charcoals. Several years later she began exploring oils and acrylics. The subject matters of her paintings are primarily still lifes and landscapes. Gardening is one of her other creative passions, so inspiration often comes from nature and the study of light, shadows, and textures.

Marta is also a published author of crime mystery novels all of which have received several awards and recognitions over the years. Her recent publication in 2021 is an anthology of short mysteries. Marta retired in 2020 from Ball State University, Human Resources, after 41 years. Since then, she has pursued her life-long passion—art.

Cinematic Environments
Cinematic Environments is an exhibition of short films centered around world-building that occupies the fuzzy space between realism and speculation. Students from the Department of Architecture, within the College of Architecture Planning at Ball State University, produced films by photographing small scale, detailed models using cinematic techniques utilized by Hollywood. Through filmic representation, the projects aimed to present immersive atmospheres without the use of narrative or dialogue. 

Students presenting work: Maarten Bergsma, Favian Cervantes, Charlie Davis, Alli Gerardot, Tessa Hill, Camden Hochgesang, Kevin Hundt, Allison Loth, Assumpta Nyein, Seong Joon Park, Elliot Shide, Long Tram, Barbara Wiley, and Isaac Wilson.

The Final: This is (not) a Sign
An exhibition of Neon work including both sculptural and sign based forms from the current Ball State Neon Class. Students include: Caitlyn Brown, Angelica Lavergne, Katrina Mitchell, Erica O’Connor, Kat Pendleton, Steven Polchinski, Victoria Stout, and Bethany Uremovich.

Muncie Map Co. will be revealing the long-awaited update to the Ultimate Muncie Map. A follow-up to the 2019 map of the same name, the 2022 edition is all new, including updated and additional details in a refined aesthetic to create the finest map of Muncie ever produced. A limited number of copies will be available for purchase on First Thursday. Visitors will also be able to peruse the Local Business Hall of Fame, a growing collection of graphics from legendary Muncie establishments of the past, available to order on a wide range of apparel and other products.

Muncie, Indiana – YART is Coming! 

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues here and in several U.S. cities - a Muncie original! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, at Canan Commons, twice a year, Spring and Fall, and coincides with ArtsWalk. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 2nd!

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 2nd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. 

All forms of Art are welcome at YART! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of Artists! YART encourages pandemic-safe interaction between Artists and the community, hoping to make Art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy Art for themselves and their homes. To this goal, all YART Art will be priced below $40! YART works to enable local creative entrepreneurs and to improve the Muncie economy. Shop local, support independents, enjoy your town! 

The last YART featured over 100 Artists! Each YART Artist will be present throughout YART to meet the public, discuss their Art, handle sales personally, and some Artists will be making Art LIVE at YART!
