Muncie Mystery
Various locationsDo you have the brains, heart and courage to solve the Muncie Mystery?
A crime – pretend crime, of course – has been committed and we need YOUR help finding the culprit and the “weapon” used.
Join fellow citizen CSI: Emerald City investigators for the second Muncie Mystery during First Thursday on May 6 in downtown Muncie.
According to reports, a break-in has occurred at the Wizard of Oz’s secret Muncie laboratory in the “Emerald City” neighborhood. The suspect, despite several warnings to pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, entered the restricted area. The Wizard confronted the suspect and suffered a blow to his noggin but has not been able to identify the perpetrator.
Six primary suspects - Wicked Witch of West, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion, Glinda the Good Witch and The Mayor of Munchkinland - were spotted near the scene at the time of the crime. And, lucky for our eagle-eyed investigators, several pieces of evidence were left behind.
Between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, investigators of all ages are invited to visit 10 participating downtown businesses. At each location, you will have the chance to question suspects about their whereabouts during the time of the break in and look at crime lab reports on several possible “weapons.”
Participating businesses are YWCA, Aspect 6, Kirk's Bike Shop, Inland Design, Vahalla (21+), IVY Tech (Fisher Building), Twin Archer, Mama Bonds and The Fickle Peach (21+).
You can download a Crime Tracker – with map - now at www.muncieneighborhoods.org/munciemystery. You may also pick one up during First Thursday at Canan Commons or Dave’s Alley.
Crime Trackers must be turned in at Canan Commons by 6:30 p.m. The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Canan Commons at 7.
Investigators will also be able to enjoy tethered hot air balloon “rides” and meet a Horse of a Different Color and the Runway for Rescues animals at Canan Commons during the event. The hot air balloon will be set up for photo opportunities at 5 and begin tethered rides at 6:45 p.m.
Investigators who correctly identify the criminal and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including 1 Overnight Stay at the Courtyard Marriott;
2 Family Pack Tickets to see Muncie Civic Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz at Canan Commons; 1 Annual Family Membership to the Muncie Children's Museum; 1 Muncie Graphic Pillow from Muncie Map Co.; 1 Bruce Pizza and $10 drink certificate from Vallhalla; 2 tickets to Sept. 2 BSU football season opener game with BSU vs. Western Illinois; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to Twin Archer; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to The Caffeinery, and 1 Tethered Hot Air Balloon Ride at the event.
You must be present to win.
Participants are asked to follow posted mask requirements inside some downtown businesses and it is suggested masks be worn outside when in large crowds.
Muncie Mystery is presented by Downtown Muncie, Muncie Civic Theatre, Indiana Public Radio, Ball State PBS, Ball State Office of Community Engagement and Muncie Neighborhoods.

Alison Beam-Hindman is the Muncie Artists Guild’s featured Artist of the Month for May.Growing up on a small farm in Northern Indiana, Beam-Hindman learned an appreciation for the natural world from her father who also sparked her early interest in astronomy by pointing out stars by name in the clear night skies of Starke County Indiana.
Beam-Hindman earned a Bachelor of Science in technology from Purdue University North Central, and 22 years later, earned a Master of Arts in adult education from Ball State University. After retiring from Ivy Tech Community College, Beam-Hindman took time to pursue an early interest in art. She is a self-taught artist who paints in acrylics, and as a member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2015, she credits the other Guild members with providing the mentoring and friendship she needed to hone her artistic skills.
Years ago, Beam-Hindman entered the open division competition at the Delaware County Fair with a painting on cardboard in poster paints and was encouraged when the space-themed painting won first place! In 2010, Beam-Hindman’s painting of Voyager II won 2nd place for Imaging, plus the Judges’ Choice Award, at the Great Lakes Astronomical League’s competition for photographers and imagers. Her triptych paintings of Comet McNaught won first place for Imaging at the Annual Indiana Family Star Party in 2012. Several of her space-themed paintings have also won awards at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Shows.
Beam-Hindman’s lifelong interest in astronomy and space exploration inspires much of her artwork, as do works by space artists Chesley Bonestell, David Hardy and astronaut/artist Alan Bean. Beam-Hindman is also a charter member of the Muncie Astronomy Club since 2000 and is active in the Club’s community outreach program on science education, where she uses art to promote and enhance the program.

Bloom: A Beautiful Process of BecomingAbout the Artist: Debra Shidler
I hail from the mid-west; a small town in central Indiana called Portland. Art is ingrained in my upbringing as there are wood workers, glass blowers, fashion designers and painters within my family tree. I have always loved art since I was a child and could be found drawing in the afternoon sun by a door way. I have continually been inspired by nature, but had been struggling with a perfectionistic outlook throughout my art journey.
While taking classes for my art degree at Ball State; a painting teacher advised me to just live with a painting I loathed. She pushed me to see the imperfections and see the beauty in the work. That was the first time I had really stopped and took in my art. It was hard to see the beauty because I could only see what I had failed to accomplish in the painting. I began looking at the work as a whole with time I saw my painting process and fell in love.
I soon realized my creative style was marrying organic abstract with nature images ranging from birds, flowers, seed pods, wood grain, etc. While in ceramic and metal working classes I enjoyed exploring imprint of natural found objects. I loved painting in oils as this medium allows an artist to come back and push the colors or add textures. I really enjoy artist from all mediums as well. I am inspired by the colors and movement of Paul Klee’s work. The clean, organic architecture and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, and gorgeous glass work of Dale Chihuly. The impressive scale and ingenuity of the Burning Man Exhibits is truly an experience.
My work to this day still explores these very key elements and inspirations; however, it was my son who reminded me of loving the imperfections of creating again. I had recently rented a pottery wheel to help my son discover the love of art; of course, at 3 he loves to see what materials will do with force. As I pulled up a pot form from the wheel he would then “help.” This created a rose like sculpture. It was simplistic, but stunning.
My art has been in the Juried Art Show at Minnetrista, Cornerstone Center for Arts Show, Ball State’s Juried Art Show, Echo Gallery, Made in Muncie, F.B. Fogg Salon and Cornerstone Center for the Arts all in central Indiana. I have also worked within the Muncie community at the Boys & Girls Club doing summer art programs and the Unity Center; as it my goal to inspire youth to express themselves and see the beauty around them.
I began my formal art training at Ball State University in the Fall of 2001 and finished in the Spring of 2006. I was able to explore many mediums such as: enameling to copper forms and flat surfaces; metal working with various metals like copper, silver and nickel; electroforming to grow copper products, discovering numerous ceramic glazing processes and firing techniques; printing and etching; as well as painting.
The subject of this show is Bloom; a beautiful process of becoming. During this time of the epidemic, I have really been able to dive back into art again. The creative outlet has been uplifting, challenging and a welcome distraction. Most of the work is focused on flowers as this reminds me of new growth and spring when the world wakes up from hibernation. I like to paint with acid like colors, but have been trying to develop other tints and shades in my pallet. The bright colors remind me of happiness and have a playful demeanor; which I feel allow my abstract figures and objects to dance on the canvas.
I hope my work brings you joy, a feeling of optimism and a sense of freedom. Please enjoy my show.
Muncie Artist’s Guild

Muncie Artists Guild’s June 2021
Artist of the Month, Karen FisherKaren Fisher moved to Muncie in 1972 as a Ball State freshman majoring in art education. Just as her graduation goal came into sight, and her plan to exit Muncie was forming, she met Paul Fisher, a native of Muncie; the rest (as they say) is history. Paul and Karen were married in 1982 and have one daughter, Elizabeth.
Karen finished her undergraduate degree in 1976 in art education and completed her master’s degree in education in 1990. She taught reading in the Anderson schools before going to work at Gordy’s Art Mart. In 2003 Karen and Paul purchased the business from the Gordys’ and renamed it, simply, Art Mart. Art Mart is a successful art materials business in the BSU “Village.” Karen is a Certified Art Materials Retailer by NAMTA, an International Art Materials Association. This year Art Mart received two awards from the Best of Ball State which is sponsored by the Daily News. They were thrilled and proud to accept both the Best Small Business Award and the Best Customer Service Award.
Karen has taught art classes to many young students and adults over her years in art materials. She still interacts with many of those same folks, now some have kids and grandkids. Karen still does Art Camps in the summertime and often goes to area family art festivals to demonstrate one process or another. She also taught at Cornerstone Center for the Arts for several years.
As an artist Karen likes to paint and draw. “I love stuff! Often I paint or draw what is on my studio table. Recently I have enjoyed drawing and painting architectural components. In particular I have been very interested in corbels, molding and fancy bric-a-brac on old Victorian homes. Living in a 125-year-old home allows me to appreciate the work that went into all the beautiful decoration on many of the old homes.”
Karen is a member of Muncie Artist Guild, a new member of the Mayor’s Public Arts Committee as well as a longtime member of NAMTA, National Art Materials Trade Association, and, iAMart, an international organization of Independent Art Materials stores.

- First Thursday Open Studio Cicada Chorus Recording Session 5:00pm to 8:00pm @ PlySpace Gallery 608 E Main Street, Muncie, IN 47305
The Muncie Arts and Culture Council invites you to stop by the PlySpace Gallery (608 E Main Street, Muncie) for First Thursday ArtsWalk on June 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm to sing like a cicada! Inspired by the buzzing, whirring, and chirping of cicadas during the late spring and summer, PlySpace artist in residence Erin Mallea will collaborate with community members to listen to and observe insect noises in the area and develop a performance as a choral insect cacophony. On First Thursday, you can chirp, buzz, hiss, hum, and scream into a microphone and become part of her work! Recorded sounds will be woven into the final project, The Cicada Chorus, which will be presented as a video to the public at the end of June (date and time, TBD). Participation is free, but masks are required.

Erin Mallea // Artist Talk and One-night Viewing Of "The Cicada Chorus"
6:00pm @
PlySpace Gallery
608 E Main Street, Muncie, IN 47305
Join The Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MACC) for a one-night exhibition and artist talk led by PlySpace Artist in Residence, Erin Mallea. Mallea’s video project, “The Cicada Chorus”, will premiere for a one-night only public viewing following an artist talk on Tuesday, June 29, at 6:00 pm at PlySpace Gallery. The artist talk will focus on the work Mallea has completed at PlySpace, as well as previous work. “The Cicada Chorus” was created in collaboration with participants from the Muncie Community. This event is free and open to the public, with masks required.
Since joining PlySpace in May, Mallea has collaborated with individuals from the Muncie community as well as the Ball State Environmental Education Center, John Vessels of Ball State Theatre and Dance, Camp Adventure, and Red-Tail Land Conservancy to listen to and observe insect noises in the area. The research and recorded sounds were used to develop a performance video where participants make sounds to imitate a choral insect cacophony. The chorus, and subsequent video, celebrates the particularities of the region’s ecosystem and the often taken for granted “others” we live alongside that are integral to our ecosystem.
Mallea writes: “The chorus is an opportunity for collective close-looking and listening as an entrypoint to playfully, yet earnestly inhabit a non-human sensibility. The chorus has become a collective clock: mimicking the sounds of cicadas shifting from dawn to dusk and spring to summer.”
About the Artist:
Erin Mallea (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist motivated by an attempt to better understand the spaces she inhabits. Collapsing personal, natural, and national history, her work explores the past and present of particular microcosms as metaphors for larger human and environmental conditions. Analytical, meandering, playful, and often public in nature, her work scrutinizes systems of producing knowledge, place, and relationships to nature in the American landscape and manifests in a range of media including video, audio, sculpture, photography, performance, writing, and participatory projects. Mallea has exhibited internationally, advocated for the ethical memorialization of a historic oak tree, and recently sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere. Based in Pittsburgh, PA, Mallea teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and Carlow University.
More information about the Cicada Chorus visit our website, www.PlySpace/cicada. PlySpace Summer Term events can be found on the PlySpace website at www.PlySpace.org/events and the PlySpace Facebook page. Sparks teaches art privately from her studio north of Sulphur Springs and has had a long and successful career as a mural artist in Indianapolis. Currently she continues to create artwork in her childhood home, a Victorian farm house in Henry County.
Art has been a large part of who Sparks is from a very young age. She won her first award at seven, and received her first portrait commissions while still in her teens. Sparks is a naturally gifted artist, developing her talent by studying fine art in various museums and galleries and by experimentation. She draws much inspiration from her passions for travel and her observations of people.
Her paintings have won numerous awards including “Best of Show” in juried exhibits in Indiana and North Carolina. Her murals have been featured in national magazines including Better Homes and Gardens and she has been listed in the fine arts section of the “International Who’s Who in Interior Design.” Her work is well recognized in venues including the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and Kona Jack’s Restaurant (Indianapolis, IN) and the Medical College of Georgia Children’s Hospital (Augusta, GA). Karen S. Evans: Karen Evans has loved drawing and creating all her life. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of drawing alongside her brother who went on to earn his MFA and made his living as an artist. Karen’s small high school didn’t even offer art as a subject, but despite being unable to pursue her artistic interests in as straightforward a way as her brother, she has always enjoyed being creative.
Immediately after high school she began working at the Winchester Gazette, setting type. Her lifelong work has been in printing and doing graphic artwork for different newspapers. She was especially good at creating ads for area sales representatives.
Over the years, her creativity has taken several forms, including cutting hair, decorating cakes,
making candy, painting wooden and ceramic ornaments and crafts, taking photographs, managing flower gardens, making silk flower arrangements, and decorating windows for the holidays.
Always wanting a creative outlet, she began oil painting lessons in the late 1980s with various
Artists including Steve Ross (son of the famous Bob Ross), Martha Searcy, Phyllis Whitworth, and Dorothy Humbarger. For the past several years Evans has studied painting with her fellow artist of the month, Pati Sparks, who describes Evans as “one of my most talented students!” and “She isn’t satisfied until her paintings are ‘just right.’”
Evans focuses mainly on creating landscapes, but also enjoys painting flowers and portraits. Evans says, “My desire is to continue improving my ability to capture the interesting and beautiful things around us using oil paint and canvas.”

Lost Bayou Ramblers - Muncie Three Trails Music Series
7:00pm to 10:00pm @
Canan Commons
500 S. Walnut St
Modern Cajun masters Lost Bayou Ramblers will perform in a FREE, all ages outdoor concert as part of the Muncie Three Trails Music Series. The concert will take place at 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 10th at Canan Commons in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. Opening will be the Lost Bayou Ramblers themselves, playing an acoustic set of traditional Cajun music.
Lost Bayou Ramblers’ evolution as a perversely progressive band rooted in Cajun traditions continues to excite, challenge, and redefine both genre expectations as well as cultural preconceptions. Their Jack White produced performance in the 2017 documentary series and on the accompanying record release “American Epic” helped solidify Lost Bayou Ramblers’ reputation as one of the world’s finest traditional Cajun outfits, if one of the least orthodox. With eight albums, a Grammy nomination, contributions to the score of the Oscar-nominated “Beasts Of The Southern Wild,” and tours with both Arcade Fire and the Violent Femmes, the group continues to swing wide from their Louisiana home base. But their reputation within that base is solidly established, reflected by their 2012 release “Mammoth Waltz” being selected as #2 in the “Top 21 Louisiana albums of the 21st Century” by the Times Picayune. Please come and see what promises to be a truly unique musical explosion!
The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is unique in the state of Indiana as the only annual music series featuring current recording artists of national stature and critical acclaim in FREE public concerts. Other 2021 series artists are Asleep At The Wheel, the Sensational Barnes Brothers, and Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper. Drawing and making things have been present in my life since childhood. I recently retired from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ball State where I taught drawing and graphics, and design and other professional courses. Originally my focus in college was Fine Arts, but an interest in Architecture took me in a different direction. After graduation I practiced in the Washington DC area, working on several projects that were more about landscape than architecture, then embarked on a mid-life career change to study and teach landscape architecture. With full-time teaching aside now, a return to making art has been a delight. Drawing with pen and pastel, I’ve also taken classes in printmaking, both on paper and fabric. I was surprised by a growing fascination with fabric and stitch – drawing lines with thread and making marks with dye – and have been making work to exhibit for over three years. I currently have three representational works in the Figures of Speech show at the Anderson Museum, and two abstract pieces that will be in Fabulous Fibers IV in the fall in Henderson, Kentucky.
As a member of the Muncie Art Guild I’ve been showing work locally for the past several years, as well as with the Pendleton Artists Society, where I’m also a member. Both organizations do a great deal toward bringing art into the community in our area, and I’m pleased to be a part of that effort.

Jung Sun Kang /// "First Sonatas" Artist Talk and Piano Recital
6:30pm @
Cornerstone Center for the Arts
E.B. Ball Auditorium
520 E Main St. Muncie, IN 47305
PlySpace, the artist in residence program of The Muncie Arts and Culture Council is excited to announce “First Sonatas”, the artist talk and piano recital featuring PlySpace Artist in Residence, Jung Sun Kang. “First Sonatas” will take place in the E.B. Ball Auditorium of Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Friday, August 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. “First Sonatas” will serve as the world premiere of Kang’s sonata composed while at the PlySpace Artist Residency in Muncie. This event is free and open to the public, all ages welcome. Masks are required for this event. RSVP is preferred but not required at www.PlySpace.org/events.
During the artist talk and piano recital, “First Sonatas,” Jung Sun Kang will perform the First Movement of Piano Sonata No.1 by composers Carl Vine and Nikolai Kapustin, as well as premiere the composition completed while in residency at PlySpace this summer. Predominantly written by pianists who are composers, the first piano sonata often marks the beginning of the mid-career and works as an inspiration to bigger works. Kang will discuss the fascinating tradition of sonata writing, why there are so few piano sonatas written by women, and why she believes classical music is relevant, now more than ever. MuncieArts would like to thank collaborative partner, Cornerstone Center for the Arts for hosting this event.
Jung Sun Kang’s music, described as “beautiful, ethereal and heartfelt” (Kapravola Society Journal), seeks a balance between wild imaginations from many different cultures and a firm belief in classical music’s structural tradition.
Kang’s music has been commissioned by Fromm New Music Players, Brave New Works, Shakespeare and Company, fivebyfive, and the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music, among many others. She has received awards from Wildacres, PlySpace, Faber Residency, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, Willapa Bay, New York Council on the Arts, New Music USA, British Harpsichord Society, as well as Leonard Bernstein Fellowship from Tanglewood Music Center. Her music has been programmed at festivals such as International Carillon in Bruges, Summer @ Eastman, Cambridge Music and Math and Women in Music. Her music is recorded on the ArtistShare, Centaur, Delos, University of Chicago and Prima Facie labels.
An avid performer of early and new music, Jung Sun Kang has given concerts in US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. She has given world-premiere performances of music written by Robert Morris, Carlos Sanchez-Guiterrez, Juan Trigos, and many more. Since relocating to New York City in 2013, she has been performing at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Yale Club, Manhattan School of Music, Shapeshifter Lab, as well as Duane Park in a part of TriBeCa Art + Culture Night, to name a few.
Kang began her piano studies at age three, and started writing music when she was seventeen. Her curiosity and passion about Bach’s music led her into studying harpsichord and continuo playing as well. She received a BM (summa cum laude) from Ewha University in her native country South Korea and a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, where she taught and also served as a pianist of the Eastman Musica Nova Ensemble and OSSIA New Music. She also holds an Artist Diploma degree from McGill University, where she received the Schulich Scholarship. Her current interests include music written by composers/pianists, conductor-less chamber music and jazz. She resides on the Upper West Side.

Gindhart:
Debra Gindhart Dragoo is celebrating her birthday EARLY AGAIN! Local artist, arts educator and community arts advocate invites you to join her as she celebrates 69!Please stop by Gindhart at Madjax and give her some LOVE. Debra is a spoken word artist as well, it has been my voice and poetry flowing through the paint—be it aerosol, acrylics, or otherwise—it’s tactile and telling. Her work will tell the story of a young girl-artist-woman, giving voice to such issues as childhood sexual abuse/the degradation of women and girls, divorce, cancer—it’s funding, research and cure, chemical effects on the planet, hunger and stardom, all told through vibrant colors sprinkled with spray art. Always outspoken and creative, she’s poured her energy, over the years, into various projects, both personal and community-wide. She’s practiced her love of spoken-word poetry at various First Thursday (Muncie’s art night) events, and has showcased her Green Glam Studio jewelry line of environmentally friendly jewelry.
Debra believes that life passes from our art. We evolve with age and, hence, our style and medium evolve. My art is storytelling using strokes and spray, my art has been fiber and paint and public. Through years of community outreach arts programming, I hold multi-generational projects close to my artist heart. Art is in my spirit, resounding from my soul.
Muncie Artist’s Guild
Various locations
Muncie Artist’s Guild Artist of the Month: Congratulations to Deborah Brown for having won the Best-of-Show award at the Muncie Artists Guild’s 2021 annual exhibit “Artists Unmasked” which took place at the Minnetrista Cultural Center. Deborah’s winning artwork is an acrylic painting titled “The Gathering” which the judge, John C. Kelty of Fort Wayne, described as having been created with an extremely well-done painterly technique as well as with a masterful use of contrast. Deborah’s award included the honor of becoming the guild’s September Artist of the Month and the payment of her 2022 membership.Deborah is a Muncie native and completed her graduate and MA degrees at Ball State University, as well as a certification in Gifted Education. Before retiring, she taught school in southern Indiana, Georgia, Florida, then once again in Indiana.
After retiring, she pursued her lifelong love of art, attending several workshops, some of which were in Maine, Nantucket, and southern Indiana (New Harmony). Some of the workshops were taught by accomplished artists such as Thomas Dunlay, Pam Newell, Susie Rachels, Beth Schwier, Jim Faulkner, and Terry Armstrong.
Besides painting, Deborah enjoys spending time with her family (especially her grandchildren!) and traveling to various parts of the country gathering inspiration from nature and God's handiwork.
One of her favorite quotes is, "You are never too old to become what you might have been."
You can see Deborah's artwork in person during the month of September at the following businesses who have generously agreed to support the artists of the Muncie Artists Guild by hosting and displaying our creations:

Canan Commons
500 S. Walnut St
Acclaimed Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel will perform in a FREE, all ages, outdoor concert as part of the 2021 Muncie Three Trails Music Series! The concert will take place at 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 11th at Canan Commons in Downtown Muncie, Indiana. The Ball State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Buselli, will perform as the opening act. This concert is sponsored by Ball State University - learn more here:
www.bsu.edu/jazzThe musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends. Reuter’s pegged The Wheel as "one of the best live acts in the business." Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level. The alumni roster is well over 80+ members, including an impressive list of musicians who have performed with the artists such as Bob Dylan, George Strait, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, and many more. A quick scan of awards, such as "Touring Band of the Year" (CMAs, 1976) and "Lifetime Achievement in Performance" (Americana Music Awards, 2009), not to mention their near dominance of the Grammy "Country Instrumental" category over the years (they have won ten Grammys overall!), reflects the reputation of the band’s musicianship. Currently the band consists of Ray Benson on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Katie Shore on Fiddle and Vocals, David Sanger on Drums, Dennis Ludiker on Fiddle, Mandolin, and Vocals, Josh Hoag on Bass, Connor Forsyth on Piano and Vocals, and Flavio Pasquetto on Steel Guitar. Ray Benson fell in love with Western Swing because of its unique combination of American blues, swing, and traditional fiddling, and due its demanding musical chops. It’s what Benson calls "jazz with a cowboy hat". It’s a thrill to hear live and, between those Texas Twin Fiddles and Boogie Piano, you can bet you’ll be dancin’ down the aisles and swingin’ all night long when the Wheel rolls into Muncie!

Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo annual exhibit addressing Native American Indian Genocide Month during ArtsWalk 2021. Abolish Columbus Day and start celebrating the native cultures. The holiday’s popularity has been waning for some time. It has already been renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a reminder that Columbus’s voyages set off a chain of events that wreaked havoc on native populations in the New World. Columbus Day’s sentiments are superfluous. Instead, let’s focus on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. Let’s start reimagining that future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall art with Anti Columbus and pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art.
